The Bible in a Year: Daily Reading & Devotion
Today’s reading from 2 Chronicles 17–18 and John 13:1–20 invites us to consider what it means to remain faithful when obedience does not always seem logical or rewarding. Both passages reveal how spiritual formation develops over time as we learn to trust God's ways above our own instincts and expectations. In 2 Chronicles, Jehoshaphat begins well by seeking the Lord and strengthening the nation's spiritual life. Yet later he aligns himself with Ahab, placing himself in a situation that creates confusion and compromise. The passage reminds us that wisdom and faithfulness are not one-time decisions but ongoing postures that require continual dependence on God. In John 13, Jesus takes on the role of a servant and washes His disciples' feet. The moment is surprising because the One with all authority willingly embraces one of the lowest acts of service. His actions reveal that true greatness is found not in status or recognition but in humble obedience to the Father's purposes. Together, these passages invite us to reflect on how God forms humility, wisdom, and faithfulness within us. They encourage us to notice where God may be calling us to trust Him, to remain teachable, and to serve others even when the purpose or outcome is not immediately clear.
