The Bible in a Year: Daily Reading & Devotion
Today’s reading from 2 Chronicles 15–16 and John 12:27–50 invites us to reflect on the difference between starting well and remaining faithful over time. Both passages reveal that spiritual formation is not built on a single moment of commitment but on a continuing posture of trust and dependence upon God. In 2 Chronicles, King Asa responds to God's call with courage and leads the nation into a season of renewal, covenant commitment, and wholehearted devotion. Yet later in life, he begins relying on political alliances, rejects prophetic correction, and ultimately stops seeking the Lord in the midst of personal difficulty. His story reminds us that faithfulness is measured not only by how we begin but also by how we continue and end. In John 12, Jesus remains steadfast as He approaches the cross, fully aware of the suffering ahead. While many struggle to believe and others fear others' opinions, Jesus remains completely surrendered to the Father's will. His example reveals a life anchored in trust even when the path is difficult. Together, these passages invite us to consider where our confidence is resting today. They encourage us to remain dependent upon God through every season, remembering that lasting spiritual formation happens as we continually return to Him and trust Him over the course of a lifetime.
