However, upon closer examination, this notion reveals a complex reality. While students excel in using consumer technology like social media and messaging apps, they often struggle with structured learning tools that require specific skills not taught in their usual environments. This disconnect highlights a significant gap between comfort with everyday digital tools and the strategic use of technology for learning. Consequently, digital literacy should be viewed as a core educational skill that educators need to intentionally teach, encompassing abilities like source evaluation, data management, and collaboration through digital systems. The evolution of education technology indicates that while technology can enhance learning, understanding how to use it effectively remains a critical role for educators.
