In episode 01 of the Art Buffet podcast, we (Clementine and Jade) talked about the French artist Louise Bourgeois (1911–2010). After seeing her exhibition at Hayward Gallery, we were deeply impressed by how she's using needle as a forgiving, gentle weapon to repair traumatic, burdening memories; to heal the wounds in her heart through weaving. “I’ve always had a fascination with the needle,” Louise once said, “the magic power of the needle. The needle is used to repair damage. It’s a claim to forgiveness.” Biography of LB: http://www.theeastonfoundation.org/biography [http://www.theeastonfoundation.org/biography] Works discussed in the episode: The Woven Child, 2002: https://www.wikiart.org/en/louise-bourgeois/the-woven-child-2002 [https://www.wikiart.org/en/louise-bourgeois/the-woven-child-2002] (child in a fishnet) Umbilical Cord, 2003 (hanging from the bottom) The Good Mother (detail), 2003: https://www.jimcarrollsblog.com/blog/2022/4/21/the-fertile-metaphor-louise-bourgeois-and-the-woven-child [https://www.jimcarrollsblog.com/blog/2022/4/21/the-fertile-metaphor-louise-bourgeois-and-the-woven-child] (strings of breastfeed) The Woven Child, 2002 Artists discussed in the episode: José Leonilson: https://umbigomagazine.com/en/blog/2022/07/08/drawn-leonilson-no-museu-de-serralves/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=drawn-leonilson-no-museu-de-serralves [https://umbigomagazine.com/en/blog/2022/07/08/drawn-leonilson-no-museu-de-serralves/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=drawn-leonilson-no-museu-de-serralves] Hannah Lavy: https://news.artnet.com/art-world/hannah-levy-venice-profile-2130579 [https://news.artnet.com/art-world/hannah-levy-venice-profile-2130579] Astari Rasjid: https://www.cobosocial.com/dossiers/sri-astari-rasjid-bringing-out-the-warrior-within-us/ [https://www.cobosocial.com/dossiers/sri-astari-rasjid-bringing-out-the-warrior-within-us/] Arahmaiani: https://www.prestigeonline.com/id/people-events/people/artist-arahmaiani-tell-us-some-uncomfortable-truths/ [https://www.prestigeonline.com/id/people-events/people/artist-arahmaiani-tell-us-some-uncomfortable-truths/] Further information about the exhibition at Hayward gallery: https://www.southbankcentre.co.uk/whats-on/art-exhibitions/louise-bourgeois-woven-child [https://www.southbankcentre.co.uk/whats-on/art-exhibitions/louise-bourgeois-woven-child] Contact: artbuffetcj@gmail.com [artbuffetcj@gmail.com]
