Dead Drop.
In 1969, Jim Sullivan recorded U.F.O.—an album full of songs about highways, deserts, and disappearing. In March 1975, he drove from Los Angeles to Nashville to restart his career. He made it as far as New Mexico. After being pulled over by police and checking into a motel in Santa Rosa, Sullivan bought a bottle of vodka and drove into the desert. The next day, he was seen at a remote ranch 26 miles south of town. Hours later, his car was found abandoned—guitar, belongings, and $1,400 in cash still inside. He was never seen again. In this 102-minute investigation, Paul Stiling retraces Sullivan's final journey through the New Mexico desert and examines whether his music predicted his own vanishing—or revealed a mind already disappearing.
