Today we’re going to talk about the link between digestion and sleep. I’m also going to give you some helpful tips for better sleep. You need enough melatonin to get to sleep and stay asleep. But, melatonin supplements may not be the best idea because you’re not fixing the root cause of your sleep problem. Melatonin comes from another hormone called serotonin—90% of the serotonin in your body is made with the help of your friendly bacteria. Your friendly bacteria turns tryptophan into serotonin and then converts it to melatonin. But, you also need vitamin B6 to help with these conversions. If you have trouble sleeping, it’s important to focus on supporting your microbiome. Here are a few fantastic ways to support the microbiome so you can start sleeping better: • Take probiotics  • Take vitamin B6 • Consume kefir  • Consume fermented foods (sauerkraut or kimchi) • Consume fiber from vegetables (unless you have a gut problem) If you do intermittent fasting, you may start getting better sleep if you shift your eating window to earlier in the day. This means you would have breakfast and your second meal no later than 3 pm. Dr. Eric Berg DC Bio: Dr. Berg, age 57, is a chiropractor who specializes in Healthy Ketosis & Intermittent Fasting. Is bread bad for you? I won’t tell you not to consume bread, but consider what would happen if you gave it up. DATA: https://www.mdpi.com/2072-6643/12/12/3785 https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5025969 Links to Bread Recipes: https://drbrg.co/3NwkOgx https://youtu.be/zsl5ENgZnr0 0:00 Introduction: Is bread healthy? 0:30 Negative effects of bread 0:55 Gluten explained 5:44 Gluten-free foods 6:05 Alternative bread recipes 6:18 Learn more about the healthiest bread you can eat! Is bread keto-friendly? No. Is bread good for you? No. Let’s talk about why. Consuming bread raises your blood sugar levels and affects the body in many negative ways. Most bread also contains glyphosate, an herbicide that can lead to many health issues. Another big problem with bread is that it contains gluten. Gluten is a general term for a variety of proteins. These proteins are in certain grains, especially wheat. Our bodies can’t fully digest gluten, and it’s associated with celiac disease. The great majority of people actually have a genetic problem that causes them to be gluten-intolerant. However, a lot of people don’t notice any symptoms even though they have a genetic problem with gluten intolerance. This could be because one specific protein that’s part of the gluten complex stimulates a person’s opioid receptors. This can mask GI symptoms from eating gluten even though the gluten is still damaging your body. Just because you’re not experiencing GI symptoms from gluten doesn’t mean it’s not affecting your body in other ways. Other gluten side effects can include: • Diabetes • Hashimoto’s • Psoriasis • Dermatitis • Depression • Anxiety • Autism • ADD • Changes in the brain and brain function • Heavy or irregular periods • Erectile dysfunction Consider not consuming bread or grains for just one month and see how you feel—I think you’ll notice a huge difference.
