And the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn him to death and deliver him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified, and he will be raised on the third day.” A Mother's Request Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee came up to him with her sons, and kneeling before him she asked him for something. And he said to her, “What do you want?” She said to him, “Say that these two sons of mine are to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your kingdom.” Jesus answered, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am to drink?” They said to him, “We are able.” He said to them, “You will drink my cup, but to sit at my right hand and at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father.” And when the ten heard it, they were indignant at the two brothers. But Jesus called them to him and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. It shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be your slave, even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” ---------------------------------------- Study Guide Questions: Observation Questions Observation Questions focus on gathering facts and identifying key details. This can include repeated words, themes, and characters). Observation asks "what does the text say?" not "what does the text mean?" It is not intended to go into interpretation or life application yet. Observations provide a crucial foundation for accurate interpretation and application, preventing misconceptions. * What observations do you note in today's passage? * What specific path does Jesus say he must walk in Matthew 20:18-19? * How does the mother of James and John demonstrate both faith and misunderstanding in her request? * What does Jesus mean by “the cup” in verse 22? * How does Jesus redefine greatness in verses 26-28, and what example does he give to support this? Interpretation Questions Interpretation Questions focus on interpreting what has been observed. The goal is to try to understand the original author's intended meaning and purpose for the intended audience. Interpretation bridges observations with life applications. It will consider key terms, explores context, and answers "why" to uncover the main point. * What are some key points that resonated with you from the message? * How does the path Jesus must travel (vv18-19) inform the disciples’ request for status? * How did James and John misunderstand Jesus's reference to the "cup" they would drink from? * Why does Jesus connect suffering (“the cup”) to glory, and how does this redefine ambition for his followers? * Why might the disciples’ indignation at James and John (verse 24) reveal their own misplaced priorities? * How does the contrast between Gentile rulers and kingdom servants (verse 25-26) challenge cultural assumptions about power and success? * In what ways can “great faith” still lead to idolatry, as seen in the mother’s request? Life Application Questions Life Application questions are intended to transform knowledge gleaned from observations and interpretations to practical application in your life. These questions are intended to move the facilitator and the participant from understanding what the text meant to how it applies to daily life. Life application questions are intended to transform listeners into doers, bridging biblical truth with current circumstances to foster personal transformation and spiritual maturity. * What is your key take away from the message? * What assumptions about success or comfort might you need to test to ensure they align with Jesus’ call to serve rather than seek power? * The mother’s love for her sons became an idol. Are there good desires in your life (e.g., for family, ministry, or security) that risk overshadowing your loyalty to Christ? How can you reorder them? * Jesus’ path to glory required suffering. What costly act of service or humility have you avoided because it felt too painful? What step could you take to embrace it? * Reflect on a time when your spiritual ambition was fueled by merit (“I deserve this”) rather than grace (“I’ve been given this”). How does gratitude reshape your motivation?
