A Mom to the Third Power: Katie Powner on Adoption, Fostering & Telling the Truth

Award-winning author Katie Powner has spent years as a foster mom in Montana, and she's here to tell the truth about a system most people only think they understand. In this episode, Katie sits down with me to talk foster care, adoption, and the stories that don't make the headlines — the humanity behind the paperwork. Katie always knew she wanted to write. A poem she wrote for her mom as a kid, and a mom who loved it like it was Shakespeare, set her on the path to becoming a two-time Christy Award-winning novelist. But it was becoming a "mom to the third power" — biological, adoptive, and foster — that gave her something bigger to say. She opens up about the long, grueling timeline of adopting her daughter internationally, and how that wait led her family to start fostering babies ages 0–2, showing up for kids in the most critical window of their development. Her new novel, Birds on a Wire, comes straight out of those early years in the foster system — the hard parts, the holy parts, and everything she had to process along the way.
