A Girl and her Dad
Why was a drag show held on public elementary school grounds? A family-friendly Pride event featuring drag performances was held on public school property, sparking backlash and raising serious questions about children, parental rights, school board oversight, and who approved the facility rental. Although the school district said it did not sponsor the event, an outside organization was permitted to rent the elementary school grounds for the gathering. In this episode of A Girl and Her Dad, Jackie and her dad discuss the drag show controversy, the school district’s response, whether public schools should rent their facilities for politically and culturally controversial events, and what concerned parents can do when they believe school leadership has crossed a line. We also examine the difference between allowing private expression and using taxpayer-supported school property for an event involving children. Does approving a facility rental amount to endorsing the event? Should the same standards apply to religious, conservative, political, and Pride organizations? And where should schools draw the line? Watch the full conversation and tell us what you think in the comments: Should drag performances marketed as family-friendly ever be held on elementary school property?
