The resurrection of Christ is anticipated throughout the Old Testament in both prophecy and pattern. David declares that God would not leave His Holy One in the realm of the dead nor allow Him to see corruption (Psalm 16:10), a statement the New Testament directly applies to the Messiah’s resurrection. Isaiah likewise foretells that after the Servant suffers and dies for the sins of the people, “He shall prolong His days” and see the results of His atoning work (Isaiah 53:10–11), implying life restored after death. Hosea presents the pattern of God raising His people on “the third day” (Hosea 6:2), a rhythm early Christians recognized as pointing toward Christ’s rising. Several Old Testament events also foreshadow resurrection: Jonah’s three days in the fish prefigure the Messiah’s three days in the grave (Jonah 1:17; cf. Matthew 12:40). Abraham receiving Isaac back “in a figure” (Hebrews 11:19) anticipates a Father’s beloved Son restored to life. Joseph’s descent into suffering and later exaltation (Genesis 37–50) reflects the same pattern of death‑like humiliation followed by life and glory. Together these prophecies and foreshadows form the scriptural expectation that the Messiah would suffer, die, and rise again—fulfilled when Christ was raised “according to the Scriptures” (1 Corinthians 15:3–4).
