When a Parent Loses Their Adult Child to Suicide

John was raised in a broken home by a father who was an alcoholic; his mother ended a lifelong struggle with depression with suicide, all of which had a profound affect on John’s heart. John was married and a pastor for more than 8 years… but lost his marriage to divorce. In previous broadcasts John shared his story which included a years long struggle with same sex attraction and pornography, his journey to freedom, and the critical need for support from others. In this show John returns to share the story of his son committing suicide.

The Cover Up

When individuals, families, and churches hide their sin, be it large numbers of men and women ensnared in sexual sin or pornography, or if someone is abused sexually or spiritually, the system becomes more important then helping God’s people, or even God’s holiness. On a large scale, some in leadership positions may try to silence those who have been abused in their flock in order to “protect the reputation of the church,” which adds more pain to those who have been hurt and states that the holiness of God doesn’t matter. Mike discusses how the coverup causes more damage than good. “Whoever conceals his transgressions will not prosper but he who confesses and forsakes them will find mercy.” – Proverbs 28:13

Makayla Randall is 22 years old. Her story includes being sexually assaulted at church camp, addicted to porn at the age of 11 years old, then being raped twice, and running away from God. In August of 2025, she told God “if you do not change my life, I’m forever done!”. In this second of two broadcasts, Makayla shares how God healed her, the prevalence of porn in the church, and how we should be openly addressing these issues.
