Subscribe and join us for open and honest conversations about mental health across the ambulance service. Welcome to an ESS 25 podcast special with Stephen Jephcote from South Central Ambulance Service. Stephen heads the mental health team for his Trust. Here are some key highlights from the discussion:1. Ambulance and mental health leads discuss Section 136 and Right Care Right Person.2. Emphasis that patients are not prisoners – ambulance conveyance is most appropriate.3. Crews should understand their legal roles and responsibilities under the Mental Health Act.4. De-escalation and alternatives should be explored before using restrictive powers.5. Importance of holistic assessment – physical and mental health are inseparable.6. Communication, validation, and empathy are core clinical skills, not “soft” skills.7. Staff should feel confident to professionally challenge police decisions when needed.8. Use escalation frameworks (CUS, JESIP) for shared decision-making and safety.9. Documentation is vital – it shows intent, supports learning, and protects staff.10. Clinical supervision (peer, management, clinical) builds reflection and resilience.11. Ongoing CPD and self-reflection improve clinician confidence and care quality.12. Staff wellbeing matters – access support via EAP, TASC, or NHS Practitioner Health.13. Core message: look after yourself so you can look after others, and provide the right care in the right place.
