Warrick graduated from the University of Tasmania, School of Medicine, in 1988. He completed his advanced training in cardiology in Hobart, Tasmania, becoming a fellow of the Royal Australian College of Physicians. A number of years ago something incredible, an amazing coincidence, happened that started Doctor Warrick Bishop on the mission to prevent heart attacks rather than try to cure them. He was driving to work one day when he stopped at a commotion by the side of the road. A fun runner had collapsed during a fun run with a heart attack. He helped in his resuscitation only to find out that had seen the very same man two years earlier and reassured him that he was fine. Warrick had missed the chance to make a difference and it nearly cost a life!! . Based on risk calculation and the best practice of the time, he shouldn’t have been at high risk…..but he was! That meant that he had reassured a patient based on treadmill testing, the best care available at the time that he was fine, only to be part of the team that resuscitated that man when he dropped dead during a running race, this was just not good enough, and he asked himself could this be done differently? This important question started him on a journey which meant he was open to looking more closely at new and emerging technology to help in being more precise about risk of heart attack. It became clear to Warrick the more precise we can be in the information we have in regard to a patients heart health and real risk of heart attack, the better we can look after that person, it seems so obvious when you say it like that, but that opportunity is still only new and not broadly utilised in the medical community.

EP394: The REAL Truth About Cholesterol

Welcome to my podcast. I am Doctor Warrick Bishop, and I want to help you to live as well as possible for as long as possible. I’m a practising cardiologist, best-selling author, keynote speaker, and the creator of The Healthy Heart Network. I have over 20 years as a specialist cardiologist and a private practice of over 10,000 patients. Dr. Warrick Bishop, a cardiologist and CEO of the Healthy Heart Network, discusses the importance of understanding cholesterol in his podcast. He explains that cholesterol is crucial for cell membranes, hormone formation, and vitamin transport, and that LDL and HDL are transport vehicles for cholesterol. Dr. Bishop clarifies that cholesterol's impact on heart health is complex, as high LDL doesn't always indicate artery plaque, and low cholesterol doesn't always mean healthy arteries. He emphasizes the importance of coronary artery calcium scoring, particle numbers, and other factors in assessing artery health and predicting risk. For secondary prevention, lowering cholesterol is crucial, while primary prevention requires a personalized approach, considering individual risk factors and imaging. Takeaways: * Dr. Warrick Bishop, a cardiologist and CEO of the Healthy Heart Network, discusses the importance of understanding cholesterol for better heart health. * Heart disease is prevalent in Australia, with a heart attack occurring every 20 minutes, many of which could be prevented with proper knowledge. * Cholesterol is crucial for cell membranes, sex hormones, vitamin D, and transporting fat-soluble vitamins. * LDL (low-density lipoprotein) and HDL (high-density lipoprotein) are not cholesterol themselves but transport it around the body. * The relationship between LDL, HDL, and heart disease is complex and not as straightforward as commonly believed. * Coronary artery calcium scoring, ApoB levels, triglyceride to HDL ratio, and lipoprotein(a) are important indicators of arterial health and risk. * Statin therapy is beneficial for secondary prevention (after a heart event) but more complex for primary prevention (before an event). * Social media often spreads misinformation about cholesterol and statin therapy, causing confusion and apprehension. * A personalized and balanced approach is necessary to determine who should be on cholesterol-lowering therapy. * Cholesterol is just one piece of the puzzle in coronary artery disease; other factors like inflammation, insulin resistance, and plaque stability also play significant roles. * Dr. Bishop emphasizes the importance of empowering patients with clarity about their long-term care and understanding their heart attack risk through resources like www.virtualheartcheck.com.au. EP393: Dietary Influences on Pancreatic Cancer and Heart Failure: Salt, Vitamin E, and Plant-Based Diets

In this episode, Dr. Warrick Bishop, a cardiologist and CEO of the Healthy Heart Network, discusses various health topics aimed at improving heart health and overall well-being. He emphasizes the importance of salt reduction, highlighting that the World Health Organization recommends consuming less than one teaspoon of salt daily. Research indicates that potassium-based salt substitutes can significantly reduce stroke and death risks. The podcast also covers bone health, clarifying that vitamin E may not be beneficial for bone density, while vitamins D and K2 are suggested for better bone and vascular health. Dr. Bishop addresses the challenges of early detection in pancreatic cancer, noting its rising incidence among younger individuals and the need for awareness of risk factors. He explains heart failure with preserved ejection fraction, a condition more common in older adults, and encourages those affected to consult their specialists for appropriate medications. Lastly, he discusses the viability of plant-based diets, asserting that with proper planning, nutritional concerns can be effectively managed. The podcast concludes with a call to action for listeners to share the information and consider their heart health risks. Takeaways: * Heart disease is a major issue in Australia, with a heart attack occurring every 20 minutes, often preventable through better awareness and management of health. * Salt intake should be limited to less than one teaspoon per day; potassium-based salt substitutes can significantly reduce stroke and death risks. * Processed foods are the primary source of excess salt, highlighting the need for legislation to encourage the use of salt substitutes in these products. * Vitamin E does not have a clear association with improved bone mineral density; vitamin D and K2 are recommended for better bone health. * Pancreatic cancer is increasingly diagnosed in younger individuals, with only 15% of cases detected early enough for effective treatment; lifestyle factors contribute to risk. * Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction is becoming more common in older adults, and new medications are available to manage this condition effectively. * Plant-based diets can be nutritionally adequate if planned properly, addressing potential deficiencies in B12, iron, calcium, omega-3s, and protein. * Reducing salt intake and being mindful of processed food consumption can lead to significant health benefits. * Individuals should have discussions with healthcare providers about cancer screening options, especially for pancreatic cancer if there is a family history. * Proper planning and guidance from nutrition professionals can help individuals successfully adopt a plant-based diet without compromising their nutritional needs.
