Unique in that it incorporates excepts from some 800 letters he wrote into the book which adds immeasurably to the presentation in ways I've rarely come across with biographies in the past. Title was perfect as you definitely come to understand his inner struggles in becoming accepted into the art community of the time. Very good book! Starry Starry Night! I have always been a fan of Vincent Van Gogh since hearing the song, Starry Starry Night, when I was a teenager. I remember going to the library and looking up more info on him. This was in the days before we had Google! This book gives you a look at the struggles he had in his life through letters he wrote. You will also get to know him through his quotes. I look forward to reading more of the authors books on Van Gogh. The author gives us an excellent tribute to Van Gogh. Through this well written story, I learned so much more about his personal life and his battle with mental illness. His brother who was with him when he died said his last words were..."Sadness will last forever". I highly recommend this touching book if you have ever wanted to know a bit more about Vincent Van Gogh. Out of all the letters written by Van Gogh, ... Out of all the letters written by Van Gogh, the author Liesbeth Heenk has chosen well to bring a credible , believable account of the artist's struggles. In many ways although this story is enlightening ,it is also depressing when we can look with hindsight on the prices now being paid for paintings by Vincent Van Gogh. HIs illness did not help him ,but determined to not let it beat him he kept on painting. This seems to be the lot of all artists who are really serious about painting. For a practicing artist there are a number of aspects of art they may take into their conscience , much of it to do with the psychological aspects of being an artist. It seems that to be successful one must have the type of painting in vogue at the time and to have the front to withstand criticism. Vincent had neither.

Now that I have read more about Joyce however, it does create a better understanding of his writings and who the mind behind the literature is. Concise, well written, good references. Much too short and light This review of the life and legacy of such a phenomenal author and literary innovator is inadequate to cover the subject except perhaps for the curious person who is totally unfamiliar with him and his works.
