Transcript: tinyurl.com/elnepisode25 [https://tinyurl.com/elnepisode25] “We talk about epigenetics and how, you know, you can inherit trauma…I think you can also inherit intergenerational hope and resistance. And so I ,very much, feel like I am my ancestors' wildest dreams. I'm part of that legacy, and knowing that they could dismantle that system and produce all of the Black joy and liberation that I'm able to be a part of today tells me that anything is possible.”- Dr. Tiera Tanksley In this episode of Equity Leadership Now, host Jabari Mahiri speaks with Professor Tiera Tanksley about anti-Blackness in AI and the importance of demanding more from tools and technology by “talking back”. Dr. Tanksley shares her research, which examines the socio-emotional, mental health, and educational consequences of algorithmic racism in the lives and schooling experiences of Black youth. She advocates for abolitionist technologies that “re-encode anti-Black sentiments, or classist sentiments, that…provide more agency or protection for marginalized groups, that address problems identified by marginalized groups, that would lead towards more just and joyous outcomes.” Equity Leadership Now! [https://bse.berkeley.edu/eln] hosts conversations with equity-conscious leaders from Pre-K through university settings on educational research, policy, and practice. We complement the mission and goals of the 21st Century California School Leadership Academy, 21CSLA.
