On June 18th, 1975, the motion picture Jaws opened in American theaters and fundamentally transformed the film industry forever, essentially inventing what we now know as the summer blockbuster. Roy Scheider's police chief Martin Brody, Richard Dreyfuss's oceanographer Matt Hooper, and Robert Shaw's grizzled shark hunter Quint became instantly iconic characters, with Shaw's monologue about the USS Indianapolis becoming one of cinema's most memorable scenes. Jaws became the first film ever to gross over one hundred million dollars and held the title of highest-grossing film of all time until Star Wars came along two years later. It established the template for the modern blockbuster: wide release, heavy advertising, high-concept premise, and a summer release date designed to capture audiences looking for escapist entertainment.
