Napoleon Gardiner & Albert Derocher discuss what nisohkamâtowin means to them and their communities. Both Napoleon and Albert grew up in North West Saskatchewan and learnt at a young age how important it is to be humble, respect the land, and give what you can back to the community.

A Taste of Home

Harinderpal Singh Rai, owner of Kashmere and Cecilia Zimmerman, co-owner of The Grotto, share a piece of their home through their restaurants. Kashmere is named after Harinderpal's home region in India, Kashmir, and serves authentic North Indian food. When Cecilia moved from Mexico to Saskatchewan she missed and hungered for a taste of home. Not knowing how to cook the meals that she craved, she travelled back to Mexico to learn how to cook home-style meals and brought them back to Saskatchewan and created The Grotto.

Friendly Faces & Community Spaces

Tiro Mthembu, co-owner of The Hampton Hub and JP Vives, owner of Free Bird, discuss their goals of having their restaurants serve as more than a place to enjoy a good meal, but also a place to build community. Mthembu and Vives express that restaurants can strengthen communities by giving people a safe place to gather and have worthwhile discussions while enjoying good food.

Ben and Lisa Martens Bartel, owners of Grovenland Farm, share what it was like taking over and transforming Ben's family farm into something of their own. Ben and Lisa share the important role family plays in the day-to-day life on the farm and how trust and support were the building blocks of Grovenland Farm.
