In this final episode of our student podcast series, Associates Kristen Fulton (UNB, 2016) and Giles Ayers (UBC, 2016) tell us what life is like in the years following articles. How did their experiences during that year lead them to where they are now? What does finding “their place” in the Firm mean? And now that they’re becoming increasingly established in their careers, what advice would they give to a law school student starting their path to becoming a lawyer.

Being an Articled Clerk

Associates Nico Jones (Dalhousie, 2018) and John Morse (UNB, 2018) share their experiences from their articling year. They look at the importance of team work in a firm, the vital role formal and informal mentorship plays, and the much-needed supports Stewart McKelvey provides to though the year. They’ll even share some time management and survival skills!

The Summer Student Experience

Associates Maddie Coats (Dalhousie, 2020) and Chee Ng (UNB, 2021) share their experiences as summer students. We’ll hear their thoughts on the learning curve, what training and supports are built into the summer student experience at Stewart McKelvey, how to manage feedback as a student, and hear a little bit of the social side of the summer student experience.

The Recruitment Experience

Associates Cal DeWolfe (Dalhousie, 2021) and Lyndsay Scovil (Ottawa, 2021) share their personal experiences in deciding where to apply (and what was it about Stewart McKelvey), their thoughts on the recruitment process, their impressions and perceptions of working in a big law firm, (we’ll see if those match up to their experiences!), and how they worked through the nerves that are part of the recruitment process. We also talk important dates in the application process – a must-listen for law students.
