I this episode of Hold the Thought, student Members of the European Horizons Symbiosis Chapter / Symbiosis Center for European Studies Student Think Tank brings you coverage of the Swiss referendum held in september of 2021 over same sex marriage. The episode covers the the entire outcome of the referendum, and the swiss position on LGBTQIA+ rights post the referendum. Additionally, Student Members Anuj and Raghu, talk about the history of LGBTQIA+ rights, with research assistance from Taera Singh. They talk about current status and historical positions on same sex marriage in Europe as they stand on the date of recording. The episode then deals with the question of the extent to which homophobia as it exists in laws of many of the countries, is a colonial export from european countries. We take an illustrative example of India, where there is literary and historical evidence to suggest acceptance of homosexuality, but British Colonialism changed that for the country. Finally, we put light on efforts by european countries like germany and Netherlands, to put safeguarding of rights for LGBTQIA+ Individuals as a part of their foreign policy and diplomatic efforts, with illustrative examples from the german government to include the agenda as of March 2021.
