The God of love withheld His hand, Longsuffering called the rebel still; His justice waited, mercy pled, Till heaven’s conflict reached the earth. [Verse 2 — Eden and the First Gospel] Into the garden came the foe, With subtle words that questioned God; Our parents chose the tempter’s voice, And sorrow walked where peace had trod. The first sacrifice proclaimed the Lamb, The promised Seed to crush his head; From Eden’s tears the gospel dawned, Through Christ alone came living hope. The righteous bore the cross with tears, While sinners seemed to win; My feet had almost turned away, My faith grew faint within. The Judge is just, His court is set, His mercy still extends; I saw beyond this fleeting world— Then understood I their end.
