This week on the pod, we’re trying something new as we venture away from the theater of the absurd into real life absurdity, genius and downright perversion as we watched the 1994 documentary “Crumb”. Join us as we learn (some of us for the first time) about the life and work of cartoonist Robert Crumb in the acclaimed documentary following his family and life leading up to his move to France in 1991. At the Intersection of Robert Crumb we find many things, from the story of a seemingly neurodivergent  channeling his talent to create something only he can, a family in the grips of mental illness and both sexual and personal repression, and a man who’s simply plagued by his hatred and love of women. So listen in as we make a mess, talk about art, sex and life in only the way that a 2 degenerates know how. Episode 75 - Cruising (1980) - "You Ever Smoked Pole, Johnny?"

This week on the pod, the boys are leathering up and heading to the seedy part of town as celebrate Pride month with a truly divisive film amongst the gay community in William Friedkin’s 1980 crime thriller; “Cruising”. Join us as we talk about this films complicated history, a film that Friedkin didn’t even seem to make, but my god if he was going to do it, it was going to be the most graphic depiction of the gay leather scene in 1980 that he could make. Unfortunately however his true vision is laid to waste as the MPAA struck yet again, knocking a whopping 40 minutes of graphic material off Friedkins cut to get this film to an R rating; footage that has been lost to the sands of time… or locked somewhere in a former United Artists rep’s closet. But smut aside, while Cruising has had a rough history of at first being admonished and shunned by the community it portrayed a small portion of, today Cruising serves as a relic of time. A community that banned together and fought for their own survival. It’s sleepy, messy and full of arms in places they aren’t native to. (Was that a serial killer pun or a fisting pun? I’ll leave that to you to figure out). Episode 74 - The Holy Mountain (1973) "Jordorowsky's Magical Mystery Tour"

This week on the pod, shed your earthy belongings, cut your hair and read up on the Tarot as we conclude our trilogy of Jordorowksy films with his most uncompromising, visually stunning and batshit insane film with his magnum opus of surrealism in 1973’s “The Holy Mountain”. Join us as we embark on one of the most divisive films as watched by this podcast. Who knew, after countless crimes against humanity witnessed among friends, a line could be drawn over something like Tarot? The Holy Mountain is a film that goes on a journey whether you’re with it or not. A fully uncompromising vision of Director, writer, producer, costume and production designer Alejandro Jordorowsky; the film is an amalgamation of all things central to his beliefs. Art, life, politics, magic, surrealism. It’s a film with so much happening its narrative is often overwhelmed by its visuals. Or, maybe it’s just wacky as shit. Can’t it be both? Plus, the intersection of Jordorowsky and the Beatles, guerrilla filmmaking being taken to new heights; literally, and Pete tries to sell Aaron on the legitimacy of Tarot. Does he succeed? Episode 73 - Monkeybone (2001) - "The Film That Made Furries of Us All"

This week on the pod, we celebrate Aarons birthday by journeying back to a simpler time, possibly to the very moment that signaled the end of an era as we know it: The weirdly horny 90’s comedy. Channel your inner darkness into something beautiful with us, as we journey Into the Bone-Zone… or “Down Town” as the movie calls it, with 2001’s “Monkeybone”. For a movie that flopped hard at the box office (So hard we actually remember the news being as young as we were in 2001), there’s actually a lot of really bold and inventive things here on display. Pulling from Influences like “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?” and “Beetlejuice”, Monkeybone swings for the fences with it’s incredibly laborious combination of Live action, stop motion and practical effects on display. Though all that attention paid to the effects seems sorely lacking in the script department, with characters that feel underdeveloped and a plot that just sort of happens at you, and a struggle in balancing the dark/comedic tones in the film. Plus, Aaron reflects fondly on the last positive memory before the towers fell, reminiscing on a cast full of household names that seemed to all vanish after this movie, and just what exactly did this movie awaken in the two of us? Episode 72 - El Topo (1970) - "Nobody Wants to Go to The "Dead Kid Church"

This week on the pod, we continue our journey through the works of Alejandro Jordorowsky by braving the desert and experiencing death of self with 1970’s “El Topo”. What a trip man. Join us as we spend a bit more time learning about Jordorowsky himself and what brought him to create his special blend of mysticism, religion, philosophy and magic to film. Be warned, our special little guy takes a bit more of misogynistic turn this route as we dive into some of the controversy around the films rather left hook of a rape scene, and Jordorowsky’s earlier interviews about the film. But, between the heightened style at play, the flavor of a Western take on the hero’s journey,  the more overt spiritual lean of the film, El Topo definitely serves up a more engaging and taboo watch with a bit more to chew on.
