Podcast about learning to live with rapidly evolving severe multiple sclerosis. At the beginning of 2018, I was walking, albeit clumsily at times, but am now a full-time powerchair user requiring full-time care from my husband. I discuss adapting to the many changes multiple sclerosis has thrust upon us both and adjusting to this strange new world of living with a chronic illness and severe disability.

My diagnosis with multiple sclerosis took a lot less time than I know many people have to wait and I'm grateful for that. Even so, it wasn't officially diagnosed until several months after it was first raised as a possibility. In this episode, I talk about that a little bit more and how diagnosis led to starting a disease modifying therapy but, despite it stopping new brain activity (inflammation and lesions), I continued to deteriorate. I often get asked about when my multiple sclerosis began and the honest answer is, nobody is really too sure. The best answer seems to be 2016, when a noticeable decline in coordination began and a general feeling of being "not quite right". However, it would only become obvious that there was something more going on in January 2018, when 12 days of struggling to walk properly culminated in the fall that led to me being hospitalised and fast-tracked investigations that would uncover suspected multiple sclerosis... "I told you, “They believe I have multiple sclerosis.” And oh how your ears pricked up. Because you know everything about multiple sclerosis. You knew, for example, with a cast iron certainty I don’t think I’ve witnessed in anyone before, that I would get over it." On 31/12/2017, I would take my first Couch to 5K run. Less than 2 weeks later, I was struggling to walk properly. As of October 2019, I am a full timer powerchair user, requiring full time care.
