7. Journey's end

As Christian and Hopeful near the end of their journey, they glimpse the Beautiful City and are filled with joy. Along the way, they meet Ignorance, who believes his good life will be enough to enter the city without passing through the cross. At the final test, Christian and Hopeful must cross the River of Death. Christian struggles with fear, but Hopeful encourages him to remember the cross and the King’s love. Safely reaching the gates, they present their rolls of assurance and are welcomed in with great celebration. Ignorance, lacking assurance, is turned away. The story ends with a clear call to trust fully in the King’s salvation.

6. The giant and the dungeon

Christian meets a new companion, Hopeful, and together they enjoy a peaceful stretch of the journey. When the path becomes difficult, they choose a tempting shortcut, which leads them into Mislead Meadow. Captured by Giant Despair, they are imprisoned in Doubting Castle, beaten, and tempted to give up hope entirely. Christian sinks into guilt and despair, but Hopeful reminds him of the King’s power and promises. As they pray together, Christian remembers the key called Promise, which unlocks the dungeon doors. They escape and return to the King’s road, wiser and more dependent on God. This part shows how God’s promises bring freedom even in the darkest moments.

5. Trouble at the fair

Christian is reunited with Faithful, and together they travel toward the Beautiful City. Their journey takes them through Vanity Fair, a town designed to distract travellers with pleasure, wealth, and popularity. Refusing to conform, they are mocked, beaten, and arrested. Faithful boldly speaks about the King and is falsely accused. After a cruel trial, Faithful is martyred for his faith but immediately welcomed into the Beautiful City. Christian is beaten and released. Though heartbroken, he continues the journey, encouraged by Faithful’s example. This part reminds us that following Christ may bring suffering, but faithfulness leads to eternal reward.

4. The great battle

Christian encounters Apollyon, a terrifying enemy who claims ownership over him and accuses him of past failures. Though frightened, Christian stands firm, remembering he belongs to the King. A fierce battle follows, and Christian is badly wounded and nearly defeated. When all seems lost, he remembers the King’s promises and uses the sword of God’s Word to strike back, declaring his faith. Apollyon flees, defeated. Christian is healed and continues through a dark valley filled with doubt and fear. By speaking truth and trusting the King, he learns to overcome lies and discouragement. This part highlights spiritual warfare and the power of faith and perseverance.

3. The King's armour

Free from his burden, Christian travels joyfully until he reaches the Hill of Difficulty. Tempted by easier paths, he chooses the King’s road and presses on, learning that following God is not always easy. After resting unwisely and losing his roll of assurance, Christian must retrace his steps, discovering the cost of carelessness. As night falls, he faces fearsome lions guarding a palace, but learns they are chained and cannot harm him if he stays on the path. Inside, Christian is welcomed and given the King’s armour: truth, faith, salvation, peace, and God’s Word. This part shows how God equips His people for the journey ahead.
