The thief on the cross is a mentality that is prevalent, but not a great idea. Some say, "I'll consider God later, not right now." Some say, "I'm going to wait to when I'm dying." Some think that one prayer is all they need, and they'll catch up with God in Heaven. Listen in for how much the thief realized about Jesus. Maybe he had more revelation than you have.
