Phew, Maarten, I'm completely stressed out. Maarten: Oh? Door je werk weer? Oh? Because of your work again? Lisa: Nee, niet eens door mijn werk. Door een vriendin van me. Die is een huis aan het zoeken, nou, je wordt er toch helemaal gek van. No, not even because of my work. Because of a friend of mine. She's looking for a house, well, it's enough to drive you completely crazy. Maarten: Ah, de huizenmarkt. Ja, dan snap ik de stress wel. Ah, the housing market. Yes, then I understand the stress. Dan weet je al dat je flink zult moeten overbieden. Thirty? That's a lot. Then you already know you'll have to overbid significantly. Lisa: Precies! En de vraagprijs was al niet mals. Ik snap dat hele principe van overbieden gewoon niet. Je biedt toch wat iets waard is? Exactly! And the asking price wasn't cheap already. I just don't understand that whole principle of overbidding. You bid what something is worth, right? Maarten: Nou ja, de waarde wordt bepaald door wat de gek ervoor geeft. En op dit moment zijn er heel veel gekken, om het zo maar te zeggen. Well, the value is determined by what the fool pays for it. And right now there are a lot of 'fools', so to speak. Lisa: Haha, ja, dat is waar. Maar haar makelaar zei dus: 'Als je een serieuze kans wilt maken, moet je minstens twintigduizend boven de vraagprijs gaan zitten'. Haha, yes, that's true. But her real estate agent said: 'If you want a serious chance, you have to go at least twenty thousand above the asking price'. Maarten: Ja, dat hoor je vaker. Het is een direct gevolg van de woningnood. Er is gewoon te weinig aanbod, waardoor de prijzen enorm stijgen. Yes, you hear that often. It's a direct consequence of the housing shortage. Ik heb het gevoel dat ik Nederland daardoor beter ben gaan begrijpen. Ik heb echt veel geleerd. That's true. I feel like I've started to understand the Netherlands better because of it. I've really learned a lot. Maarten: Wat heb je dan vooral geleerd, als ik vragen mag? What have you mainly learned, if I may ask? Lisa: Nou, dat die directheid van ons, waar buitenlanders soms over klagen, eigenlijk ook heel efficiënt is. En dat we creatief moeten zijn met onze kleine ruimte. Dat zie je hier perfect. Maarten: Ja, dat klopt. Ik denk dat ik persoonlijk ook wel ben veranderd. Ik ben me bewuster geworden van de keuzes die ik maak, bijvoorbeeld met duurzaamheid, waar we het laatst over hadden. Het zorgt er wel voor dat iedereen zich meer betrokken voelt. Iedereen neemt meer verantwoordelijkheid voor het eindresultaat. Yes, that's true. I actually like that accessibility. It does ensure that everyone feels more involved. Everyone takes more responsibility for the final result. Lisa: Zeker, maar het duurt soms zo lang voordat er een beslissing wordt genomen. We zijn altijd op zoek naar een compromis waar iedereen mee kan leven. Dat is soms echt vermoeiend. Certainly, but sometimes it takes so long before a decision is made. We are always looking for a compromise that everyone can live with. That is sometimes really exhausting. Maarten: Dat is het polderen, hè. Zoeken naar consensus. But sometimes I think: just make a decision! Yesterday we had a three-hour meeting. Three hours! About the new corporate identity. I really thought: I'm never leaving here. Maarten: Wauw. En, wat was de uitkomst? Wow. And, what was the outcome? Lisa: Dat we volgende week verder praten. Iedereen had een ander idee en niemand wilde toegeven. That we'll continue talking next week. Everyone had a different idea and nobody wanted to give in. Maarten: Ja precies. Wij proberen dat echt te beperken. We hebben vaak korte overlegmomentjes in de pauze. Werkt veel beter. Dan bespreken we snel de belangrijkste punten en gaan we weer aan het werk. Yes, exactly. We really try to limit that. We often have short consultation moments during breaks. Works much better. Then we quickly discuss the most important points and get back to work. Lisa: Ik ben jaloers. Bij ons is elke meeting een soort democratisch festival. Iedereen wil inspraak en het voelt alsof er pas een besluit komt als echt iedereen het er 100% mee eens is. I'm jealous. With us, every meeting is a kind of democratic festival. Everyone wants a say and it feels like a decision only comes when absolutely everyone agrees 100%. Maarten: Nou ja, in de praktijk is het vaak de persoon die het hardst praat die zijn zin krijgt, toch? Of degene met het meeste geduld. Well, in practice it's often the person who talks the loudest who gets their way, right? Or the one with the most patience. Lisa: Haha, ja, of degene die het het langst volhoudt. Oh wacht, ik las laatst een artikel... In dat artikel stond dat de zeespiegel sneller zou stijgen dan wetenschappers eerst dachten. Dan denk ik meteen aan Nederland. Exactly! Oh wait, I recently read an article... That article stated that the sea level would rise faster than scientists initially thought. Then I immediately think of the Netherlands. Maarten: Ja, logisch. Wij en het water, dat is een eeuwenoud verhaal. Gelukkig hebben we de Deltawerken nog. Yes, logical. We and the water, that's an age-old story. Luckily, we still have the Delta Works. Lisa: Zeker, daar ben ik echt trots op. Een vriendin van mij uit het buitenland was hier en die vond dat zó indrukwekkend. Maar is dat wel genoeg voor de toekomst? It does show that we're good at coming up with solutions, but we mainly need to tackle the cause now: reducing emissions. Lisa: Echt hè. Ik probeer er wel bewust mee bezig te zijn. Ik pak vaker de fiets, probeer minder vlees te eten, dat soort dingen. Right? I do try to be conscious about it. I cycle more often, try to eat less meat, things like that. Maarten: Dat is al heel wat. Alle kleine beetjes helpen, zeggen ze. That's already a lot. Every little bit helps, they say. Lisa: Ja, maar soms voelt het zo... nutteloos. Dan fiets ik braaf naar de stad om de uitstoot te verminderen, en dan zie ik een superleuk jurkje en koop ik het. En dan denk ik: ja, die kledingindustrie is ook weer supervervuilend. Dan voel ik me weer schuldig. Yes, but sometimes it feels so... useless. Then I dutifully cycle to the city to reduce emissions, and then I see a really nice dress and buy it. And then I think: yeah, that clothing industry is also super polluting. Then I feel guilty again. Maarten: Haha, dat is wel herkenbaar. Je hoeft ook niet perfect te zijn. Ik hoor dat woord zo vaak, maar ik weet eigenlijk niet precies wat het inhoudt. Klinkt een beetje saai, als ik eerlijk ben. Iets met vergaderen, toch? Yes, the polder model! I hear that word so often, but I don't actually know exactly what it entails. Sounds a bit boring, if I'm honest. Something with meetings, right? Maarten: Haha, nou ja, dat is wel een groot onderdeel. Maar het is eigenlijk de basis van hoe veel beslissingen in Nederland worden gemaakt. Het gaat erom dat grote groepen met verschillende belangen proberen om samen tot een oplossing te komen. Haha, well, that is a big part of it. But it's actually the basis of how many decisions are made in the Netherlands. It's about large groups with different interests trying to come to a solution together. Lisa: Oké, en welke groepen zijn dat dan precies? Want ik voel me niet echt vertegenwoordigd in een polder. Okay, and which groups are those exactly? Because I don't really feel represented in a polder. Maarten: Nee, jij persoonlijk niet. Maar het gaat meestal om de drie grote spelers: de overheid, de werkgevers... No, not you personally. But it's usually about the three big players: the government, the employers... Lisa: ...en de werknemers, neem ik aan? ...and the employees, I assume? Maarten: Precies. En die werknemers worden dan weer vertegenwoordigd door een vakbond. Exactly. And those employees are then represented by a trade union. Lisa: Juist, die driehoek. En die gaan dan eindeloos met elkaar praten tot er iets uitkomt? Lijkt me vermoeiend. Right, that triangle. And they just talk endlessly until something comes out of it? Seems exhausting. Maarten: Dat is het ook. Het hele proces heet onderhandelen. Het doel is om een compromis te vinden. Iets waar iedereen mee kan leven. Niemand krijgt precies wat hij wil, maar niemand verliest ook alles. Alles is een beetje geven en nemen. It is. The whole process is called negotiating. The goal is to find a compromise. Something everyone can live with. Nobody gets exactly what they want, but nobody loses everything either. Everything is a bit of give and take. Lisa: Dus het is een soort mega-vergadering waar niemand echt gelukkig vandaan komt? Dat klinkt... efficiënt. Echt niet. So it's a kind of mega-meeting where nobody really comes away happy? That sounds... efficient. Not really. Maarten: Haha, zo kun je het zien. Maar de andere kant is dat je grote conflicten voorkomt. Denk aan landen waar het hele land platligt door stakingen. Dat wil eigenlijk niemand hier. De belangen zijn soms zo groot, dan is praten beter dan vechten. Haha, you could see it that way. But the other side is that you prevent major conflicts. Think of countries where the whole country is paralyzed by strikes. Nobody really wants that here. The stakes are sometimes so high, then talking is better than fighting. Lisa: Nee, dat is waar. Een staking is voor niemand goed. Maar duurt dat dan niet eeuwen? Voordat er zo'n akkoord is? No, that's true. A strike is good for no one. But doesn't that take ages? Before such an agreement is reached? Maarten: Soms wel. Het vergt veel geduld en heel veel overleggen. Maar het resultaat is vaak wel een stabiele oplossing. Iets waar de meeste mensen achter staan. Sometimes it does. It requires a lot of patience and a lot of consultations. But the result is often a stable solution. Something most people support. Lisa: Hm, ik snap het idee wel. Hm, I get the idea. Maarten: Ze zeggen wel eens dat het komt door onze geschiedenis met water. Iedereen moest samenwerken om de dijken te bouwen, anders verdronken we allemaal. Je kon niet in je eentje een dijk bouwen. They sometimes say it's because of our history with water. Everyone had to work together to build the dikes, otherwise we would all drown. You couldn't build a dike by yourself. Lisa: Oh wacht, dat is een goeie vergelijking. Je hebt de boer naast je nodig, ook al vind je hem misschien een eikel. Je moet wel samenwerken. Oh wait, that's a good comparison. You need the farmer next to you, even if you might think he's an ass. You do have to work together. Maarten: Ja precies. And you see that reflected in that consultation culture. Lisa: Ik zie het wel voor me bij ons op kantoor. Laatst hadden we een project. De ontwerpers, zoals ik, wilden iets heel creatiefs en moderns. De marketingafdeling wilde iets wat heel herkenbaar en 'veilig' was. En de baas, de werkgever, wilde vooral dat het niet te veel kostte. Speaker 1: I can totally picture it at our office.
