Hey Maarten! Maarten: Hoi Lisa. Alles goed? Je klinkt een beetje opgewonden. Hi Lisa. All good? You sound a bit excited. Lisa: Ja, ik heb net de samenvatting van de wedstrijd van Feyenoord gekeken. Man, wat een spanning! Ik heb de hele tijd op het puntje van mijn stoel gezeten. Echt, mijn hart ging tekeer. Yeah, I just watched the summary of the Feyenoord match. Man, what tension! I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. Seriously, my heart was pounding. Maarten: Haha, ja, dat kan ik me voorstellen. Ik heb de uitslag gezien. Een mooie overwinning voor jullie, hè? Haha, yeah, I can imagine. I saw the result. A nice victory for you guys, right? Lisa: Zeker weten! Dat brengt me trouwens op een idee. Sport! Hoe zit dat eigenlijk bij jou? Definitely! That actually gives me an idea. Sports! How about you, actually? Maarten: Nou ja, ik ben niet zo'n fanatieke toeschouwer als jij. Ik vind het leuker om zelf iets te doen, hoewel het meestal bij een rondje hardlopen blijft. Well, I'm not as fanatical a spectator as you are. I prefer to do something myself, although it usually just stays at a run. Lisa: Oh echt? Ik vind die hele sfeer in een stadion, of zelfs gewoon in de kroeg met andere supporters, juist geweldig. Iedereen die samen voor één team juicht. Dat heb je met hardlopen niet. Oh really? I actually find that whole atmosphere in a stadium, or even just in the pub with other supporters, amazing. Everyone cheering together for one team. You don't get that with running. Maarten: Nee, dat is waar. Maar ik vind de rust juist fijn. Vooral schaatsen in de winter. Als er natuurijs ligt, ben ik de eerste die zijn schaatsen pakt om een tocht te maken. No, that's true. But I actually like the peace and quiet. Especially ice skating in winter. If there's natural ice, I'm the first to grab my skates for a tour. Lisa: Oh wacht, schaatsen! Ja, dat is wel echt typisch Nederlands. De hele Elfstedentocht-koorts, terwijl die al jaren niet is doorgegaan. Oh wait, ice skating! Yeah, that's really typically Dutch. The whole Elfstedentocht fever, even though it hasn't happened for years. Maarten: Ja precies. Maar zelfs als er geen Elfstedentocht is, zie je dat het hele land het ijs op wil zodra het kan. Het is een soort nationale hobby geworden. Exactly. But even if there's no Elfstedentocht, you see that the whole country wants to get on the ice as soon as possible. It's become a kind of national hobby. Lisa: Ik vind het doodeng. Ik heb het wel eens geprobeerd, maar ik ben zo bang om te vallen en een blessure op te lopen. Ik ben één keer flink onderuit gegaan, en daarna was ik er wel klaar mee. I find it terrifying. I've tried it before, but I'm so afraid of falling and getting injured. I took a big tumble once, and after that, I was done with it. Maarten: Ach, dat hoort er een beetje bij. Oefening baart kunst. Hoewel ik moet toegeven dat het ijs soms best verraderlijk kan zijn, vooral als er scheuren in zitten. Oh, that's part of it. Practice makes perfect. Although I have to admit that the ice can sometimes be quite treacherous, especially if there are cracks in it. Lisa: En hoe zit het dan met de competitie? Ben je dan ook zo gedreven om te winnen van anderen? And what about competition then? Are you also so driven to win against others? Maarten: Niet echt. Bij schaatsen gaat het voor mij meer om de prestatie voor mezelf, om de afstand. Bij voetbal lijkt het alleen maar te gaan om het winnen van de tegenstander. Not really. For me, with ice skating, it's more about the personal achievement, about the distance. With football, it seems to be only about winning against the opponent. Lisa: Ja, dat is het hele punt! De spanning, de strijd! Het gevoel na een overwinning is onbeschrijfelijk. En ja, het verlies is vreselijk, maar dat maakt de volgende winst weer mooier. Yes, that's the whole point! The tension, the struggle! The feeling after a victory is indescribable. And yes, losing is terrible, but that makes the next win even better. Maarten: Dat is de mentaliteit van een echte supporter, denk ik. Ik zie het ook bij de kinderen op school tijdens de Koningsspelen. Die worden ineens ongelofelijk fanatiek. That's the mentality of a true supporter, I guess. I also see it with the children at school during the King's Games. They suddenly become incredibly fanatical. Lisa: Oh ja, de Koningsspelen! Dat is ook zoiets typisch Nederlands. Allemaal in oranje sporten op de dag voor de verjaardag van de koning. Oh yeah, the King's Games! That's also something typically Dutch. Everyone doing sports in orange on the day before the king's birthday. Maarten: Precies. We organiseren dan een hele sportdag. De kinderen doen mee aan allerlei wedstrijden, van zakkenlopen tot een kleine voetbalcompetitie. Ze nemen het heel serieus. Exactly. We then organize a whole sports day. The children participate in all sorts of competitions, from sack races to a small football league. They take it very seriously. Lisa: Haha, ik zie het al voor me. Kleine Maartens die heel serieus aan het sporten zijn. Haha, I can just imagine it. Little Maartens seriously doing sports. Maarten: Nou, ze zijn vooral heel luidruchtig. Maar het is wel mooi om te zien hoe ze opgaan in het spel, ook al is het maar voor de lol en niet voor een echte prijs. Well, they're mostly very noisy. But it's nice to see how they get into the game, even if it's just for fun and not for a real prize. Lisa: Maar doe jij dan ook mee? Of ben je alleen de scheidsrechter die alles in goede banen leidt? Speaker 1: But do you join in then? Or are you just the referee who keeps everything running smoothly? Maarten: Ik probeer het te beperken tot aanmoedigen. Weer een? Wat is het dit keer, een app die je sokken voor je sorteert? Oh yeah? Another one? What is it this time, an app that sorts your socks for you? Lisa: Nee! Veel beter. Maar het zette me aan het denken... over startups enzo. Hoe begin je zoiets nou echt? No! Much better. But it got me thinking... about startups and stuff. How do you really start something like that? Maarten: Nou ja, met meer dan alleen een idee, meestal. Je hebt een heel plan nodig. Well, with more than just an idea, usually. You need a whole plan. Lisa: Een businessplan, bedoel je? Pff, lekker belangrijk. Ik vind dat je met een goed idee en veel energie al een heel eind komt. Kijk naar al die succesvolle ondernemers! A business plan, you mean? Pff, as if that's important. I think that with a good idea and a lot of energy, you can get quite far. Look at all those successful entrepreneurs! Maarten: Dat is waar, maar die ondernemers hebben wel nagedacht over de volgende stappen. Je kunt niet zomaar iets lanceren. Je hebt financiering nodig, bijvoorbeeld. That's true, but those entrepreneurs did think about the next steps. You can't just launch something. You need funding, for example. Lisa: Financiering... ja, oké. Je bedoelt dat je een investeerder moet vinden die geld in je idee wil steken. Funding... yes, okay. You mean you have to find an investor who wants to put money into your idea. Maarten: Ja precies. En een investeerder wil een businessplan zien. Die wil weten wie je klanten zijn, wat de markt is, en wie de concurrentie is. Yes, exactly. And an investor wants to see a business plan. They want to know who your customers are, what the market is, and who the competition is. Lisa: Concurrentie... Daar zeg je wat. Voor mijn app zijn er vast al duizend anderen. Dan moet je dus echt innoveren om op te vallen. Competition... You've got a point there. For my app, there are probably already a thousand others. So you really have to innovate to stand out. Maarten: Eigenlijk wel. Je moet iets beter of anders doen. Of een compleet nieuwe technologie gebruiken. Kijk naar een bedrijf als ASML. Die zijn zo groot geworden door constant te innoveren met hun chipmachines. Dat is natuurlijk een extreem voorbeeld. Actually, yes. You have to do something better or different. Or use a completely new technology. Look at a company like ASML. They became so big by constantly innovating with their chip machines. That's an extreme example, of course. Lisa: Wauw, ja, dat is een ander niveau. Maar je hebt ook kleinere voorbeelden, toch? Zoals TomTom vroeger. Dat was toch ook gewoon een Nederlandse startup? Wow, yes, that's another level. But you also have smaller examples, right? Like TomTom back in the day. That was also just a Dutch startup, wasn't it? Maarten: Klopt. Ik schrijf een businessplan. Wat dan? Dan moet ik zeker een... hoe heet dat... een proefversie maken? Okay, so let's say I have my brilliant idea. I write a business plan. What then? Then I definitely need to make a... what's it called... a trial version? Maarten: Een prototype, ja. Iets wat je kunt laten zien aan een potentiële investeerder. Om te bewijzen dat je technologie werkt en dat je idee niet alleen maar een droom is. A prototype, yes. Something you can show to a potential investor. To prove that your technology works and that your idea isn't just a dream. Lisa: Een prototype... oh wacht, dat klinkt als veel werk. Misschien moet ik mijn idee eerst eens op papier zetten. Ik denk dat mijn app echt schaalbaar is. A prototype... oh wait, that sounds like a lot of work. Maybe I should put my idea on paper first. I think my app is really scalable. Maarten: Schaalbaar? Wat bedoel je daar precies mee? Scalable? What exactly do you mean by that? Lisa: Nou, gewoon, dat het groot kan worden! Toch? Van één gebruiker naar een miljoen gebruikers zonder dat alles instort. Well, just that it can get big! Right? From one user to a million users without everything collapsing. Maarten: Ja, dat is de kern ervan. Dat je bedrijf kan groeien zonder dat de kosten evenredig meegroeien. Dat is iets waar elke investeerder naar kijkt. En een doorbraak is ook een mooi woord. Dat moment waarop iedereen ineens je product wil hebben. Yes, that's the core of it. That your company can grow without costs growing proportionally. That's something every investor looks at. And a breakthrough is also a nice word. That moment when everyone suddenly wants your product. Lisa: Precies! De grote doorbraak! Dat wil ik. Maar eerst dus dat businessplan. En een prototype. En de concurrentie analyseren. Het is toch ingewikkelder dan ik dacht. Exactly! The big breakthrough! That's what I want. But first, that business plan. And a prototype. And analyzing the competition. It's more complicated than I thought after all. Maarten: Het is een serieuze onderneming. Daarom heet zo iemand ook een ondernemer. Die neemt risico's, maar wel berekende risico's. It's a serious undertaking. That's why such a person is called an entrepreneur. They take risks, but calculated risks. Lisa: Ik ben het er niet helemaal mee eens. Ik denk dat de beste uitvindingen soms ontstaan uit pure chaos en passie, niet uit een spreadsheet. Speaker: I don't entirely agree with that. Ik moest er ineens aan denken, wel een beetje dramatisch misschien... Exactly! And then that wind... It's going well like this. It suddenly made me think, a bit dramatic perhaps... Maarten: Nou, vertel. Well, tell me. Lisa: Ik keek gisteren een documentaire over de watersnoodramp van 1953. Echt niet normaal wat daar is gebeurd. Yesterday I watched a documentary about the North Sea flood of 1953. What happened there was truly unbelievable. Maarten: Oh ja, dat is een enorme gebeurtenis in de Nederlandse geschiedenis. Vooral in Zeeland was de impact gigantisch. Oh yes, that's a huge event in Dutch history. Especially in Zeeland, the impact was enormous. Lisa: Ja, en als je dan zo'n storm hoort, ga je er toch over nadenken. Wij zitten hier nu hoog en droog in Utrecht, maar een groot deel van Nederland ligt natuurlijk onder de zeespiegel. Yeah, and when you hear a storm like that, it really makes you think. We're sitting here high and dry in Utrecht, but a large part of the Netherlands is, of course, below sea level. And what you just said, that 'worrying', that fits too. It's something to worry about. Lisa: En dat woord 'afvoeren', dat gebruik je dus voor water dat wegstroomt? And that word 'afvoeren' (to drain/discharge), you use that for water that flows away? Maarten: Klopt. Het water van de rivieren naar de zee afvoeren. Zorgen dat het weggaat, zeg maar. Net als je afval afvoert. Correct. Draining the water from the rivers to the sea. Making sure it goes away, so to speak. Just like you dispose of your waste. Lisa: Ah, logisch. En oh wacht, het grappigste was Thomas. Voordat hij naar de borrel was gekomen, had hij per ongeluk de verkeerde trein genomen en was hij bijna in Den Haag beland. Typisch Thomas. Exactly! And oh wait, the funniest thing was Thomas. Before he came to the get-together, he had accidentally taken the wrong train and almost ended up in The Hague. Typical Thomas. Maarten: Haha, dat klinkt bekend. Bij mijn vriendengroep is dat minder een probleem. Wij wonen bijna allemaal nog in of rond Utrecht. Dat maakt afspreken een stuk makkelijker. Haha, that sounds familiar. With my friend group, that's less of a problem. We almost all still live in or around Utrecht. That makes meeting up a lot easier. Lisa: Ja, dat scheelt enorm. Jullie hebben echt zo'n vaste kern, hè? Yes, that makes a huge difference. You really have such a core group, don't you? Maarten: Eigenlijk wel, ja. De meesten ken ik al van de middelbare school. We hebben een appgroep en daar wordt regelmatig in gepraat. Maar toch moet je wel het initiatief nemen om echt wat te doen. Actually, yes. I've known most of them since high school. We have a group chat and we talk in it regularly. But you still have to take the initiative to actually do something. Lisa: Zeker. Anders blijft het bij praten in die appgroep. Soms ik, soms een ander. Ik had laatst een borrel bij mij thuis georganiseerd, gewoon omdat het alweer een tijd geleden was dat we elkaar echt hadden gezien. Dat was heel geslaagd. That varies. Sometimes me, sometimes someone else. I recently organized a get-together at my place, simply because it had been a while since we had really seen each other. That was very successful. Lisa: Wat goed van je! Ik vind het soms wel lastig. Iedereen is zo druk met werk, relaties... Dan schiet het erbij in. Good for you! I sometimes find it difficult. Everyone is so busy with work, relationships... Then it just gets neglected. Maarten: Dat is waar. Maar vriendschap is ook een werkwoord, zeggen ze wel eens. Je moet er wel wat energie in steken. Dus niet alleen de taal, maar ook hoe alles hier werkt. Dat lijkt me best veel informatie om te verwerken. Wow. So not just the language, but also how everything works here. That seems like a lot of information to process. Maarten: Zeker, want tegelijkertijd moet je ook gewoon je leven opbouwen hier. Een huis vinden, werk, een sociaal netwerk. Het beleid van de overheid is de laatste jaren wel veranderd. Tegenwoordig moeten mensen veel meer zelf regelen en betalen. Anna: Exactly. Government policy has changed in recent years. Nowadays, people have to arrange and pay for much more themselves. Lisa: Echt? Dat maakt het er niet makkelijker op. Zeker niet als je nog geen baan hebt. En je moet het natuurlijk ook halen voor je verblijfsvergunning, toch? Really? That doesn't make it any easier. Especially if you don't have a job yet. And you also have to pass it for your residence permit, right? Maarten: Ja, vaak wel. Het is een voorwaarde voor een permanente vergunning. Dat geeft natuurlijk wel extra druk. Anna: Yes, often. Het gaat niet alleen om een diploma, maar om je hele toekomst in een land. Phew, I can imagine those exams are incredibly stressful then. It's not just about a diploma, but about your entire future in a country. Maarten: Dat is waar. Daarom is het ook zo belangrijk dat er goede begeleiding is. Niet alleen taalles, maar ook hulp bij het vinden van je weg in de maatschappij. Anna: That's true. That's why it's so important that there's good guidance. Not just language lessons, but also help with finding your way in society. Lisa: Absoluut. Mijn buurvrouw volgt lessen via een buurthuis. Daar ontmoet ze ook andere mensen. Dat sociale aspect lijkt me minstens zo belangrijk. Absolutely. My neighbor takes classes through a community center. She also meets other people there. That social aspect seems at least as important to me. Maarten: Jazeker. Omdat je de taal leert om te kunnen communiceren, is oefenen in de praktijk essentieel. Alleen uit een boekje leren is niet genoeg. Anna: Absolutely. Because you learn the language to be able to communicate, practicing in real life is essential. Just learning from a book isn't enough. Lisa: Nee, echt niet. Je moet het durven gebruiken. Ik ga haar zeker vaker uitnodigen voor een kopje koffie. Gewoon, om lekker te kletsen. No, really not. You have to dare to use it.
