When My Heart Hurts - Week 2

Last Sunday we began our journey with a simple but honest truth: sometimes the road of faith is a hard road. We talked about that strange Ash Wednesday walk — sloppy snow underfoot, slow steps, a walking stick that wasn’t decorative but necessary. A reminder that sometimes the gift of this season is learning to move more slowly… to pay attention… and to lean more fully on the presence of God when the ground feels uncertain. Because the truth is, our hearts hurt. They hurt over loss, over broken dreams, over diagnoses we never expected, and seasons that leave us feeling like we’ve wandered into a wilderness we didn’t choose. This Sunday we continue that journey by hearing a story from people who have walked that road in very real ways. Troy and Melissa Cleland will be joining us to share part of their story. Troy serves as the Director of Michiana Christian Camp and has spent much of his life in Christian camping ministry, along with seasons serving as a professional firefighter and working in home construction and remodeling. Melissa teaches in a nursing program and has spent many years investing in people through Christian camping ministry, teaching in both public and private schools, and working as an interpreter. Together they’ve spent their lives caring for people and walking alongside others in meaningful seasons of life. They have one daughter, Aslinn, who is married to Tyler, and they recently became grandparents to their five-month-old grandson, Judah — a role they are loving. But this Sunday they won’t simply be talking about what they do. They’ll be sharing part of the journey they’ve walked themselves — seasons of deep loss, uncertainty, and grief. Their story reminds us of something we’re learning together in this series: when life becomes heavy and the road turns hard, God’s presence does not disappear. He meets us right there. If you’ve ever wondered where God is when life hurts… this will be a meaningful Sunday to be together.
