James Handy (1945–2026) was a prolific American character actor whose career in film and television spanned nearly five decades. Born on March 19, 1945, in New York City, he discovered his passion for acting while studying English and drama at university, where he performed in numerous plays. His entry into professional acting was delayed by the Vietnam War, during which he was drafted to serve in the 196 Lightning Brigade. Between 1966 and 1967, he experienced intense combat in Tây Ninh, an ordeal that profoundly affected him and led him to become a lifelong pacifist.Handy’s screen career began in 1977, and he eventually accumulated approximately 150 acting credits. He became a staple of Hollywood as a versatile character actor, often portrayed in roles as authority figures, law enforcement officers, or doctors. One of his earliest film roles was as a sheriff in the 1981 thriller Taps, where he appeared alongside a young Tom Cruise. He would later reunite with Cruise in the 2022 blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick, playing Jimmy the bartender, which served as his final high-profile role. His extensive filmography includes several high-profile projects from the 1980s through the 2010s. Notable roles include Lieutenant (later Captain) Byers in the buddy-cop film K-9 and its sequel K-911, the exterminator in the 1995 classic Jumanji, and an FBI agent in The Rocketeer. He also appeared in The Verdict, Arachnophobia, and Unbreakable. In 2017, he played a doctor who treats Wolverine in the film Logan, a performance praised for its emotional weight despite limited screen time.On television, Handy was equally active, maintaining recurring roles and guest appearances in many iconic series. He is well-remembered for portraying the stern and antagonistic Captain Jim Haverill in NYPD Blue and FBI Director Arthur Devlin in Alias. His other television credits include Profiler, Melrose Place, The West Wing, Criminal Minds, The X-Files, and ER. Throughout his career, he earned a reputation as one of the industry's most reliable and "finest character actors".Tragically, James Handy died at the age of 81 on June 3, 2026, following a violent incident at his home in Tarzana, Los Angeles. He was found unconscious in his front yard with multiple stab wounds to the chest and was later pronounced dead at a local hospital. The suspect, 44-year-old Michael Gledhill, who is the son of Handy's girlfriend and lived at the residence, was arrested and charged with murder. Gledhill reportedly called 911 to confess, stating, "I am the son of man, I just killed the man of sin". Following the arrest, authorities described the killing as an isolated domestic incident. Handy is remembered by colleagues and friends as a talented, humble, and gracious artist who maintained a steady and distinguished presence in Hollywood for forty years.
