We Demo the New Holland CR11, the Biggest Combine in the World

We have a very special guest on the farm this week. Ernest Doe kindly brought down the brand new New Holland CR11, billed as the biggest and most powerful combine in the world, along with a 45 foot MacDon header, for us to put through its paces. In this episode James, Kieran and Sandy all take a turn at the wheel, and we get a proper technical walkthrough of what makes this machine and its radar controlled residue management so different, and how it stacks up against our fleet of Claas Lexions. There is talk too of the 61 foot header to come, and what a step up like that would really mean. For a bit of fun we also line all five combines up in the field together, with the New Holland flanked by our four Claas machines. Away from the demo, the wheat keeps coming in, with the early drilled crops holding up well in the drought, and we get an update on the BBM accommodation trailer conversion taking shape. There is progress on the house too, and preparations to move the whole operation up to Lincolnshire. Combining the Beans in a Drought, and Why Our Yields Are Down

Harvest rolls on, and the drought is really making its presence felt. In this episode we get the combines into the beans, and explain the fine timing involved in cutting them before the heat splits the pods and the crop ends up on the floor. We also take an honest look at what this dry year is doing to our yields, with some crops coming in as much as 50% down on what we hoped. Behind the combines the whole operation keeps moving. Some days at harvest just do not go to plan, and this was one of them. In this episode the grain store conveyor belt fails, two tractors go down with sensor faults, and the dry conditions start to bite hard on skids and cultivator points, all while the combines have to keep rolling. We take an honest look at the reality of a tough day, the value of a good team, and why, as James puts it, farming is all about backup plans. There is a happy moment too. Cutting Wheat on the 7th of July, the Earliest We Have Ever Started

It is the 7th of July, and we are cutting wheat. That is the earliest we have ever started in a whole career of farming, and a sign of just how much this hot, dry summer has brought everything forward. In this episode we take the very first wheat off, check the early moisture, bushel weights and protein, and place our bets on what the yield is going to be before the result is revealed. Between fields there is a huge amount to catch up on. We continue the careful job of putting right the land damaged by the infrastructure projects crossing the farm, and take an honest look at the lasting yield hit we expect to see for years to come.
