The greatest threat to our spiritual lives often isn't adversity—it's pride. When life is difficult, we naturally depend on God. But when life is going well, we can slowly begin believing that our success is the result of our own strength, wisdom, or ability. Pride quietly shifts our focus from the Giver to the gifts. He bore the judgment we deserved so that we could receive the righteousness we could never earn.
