SPED Legacy
In this episode, John talked to Dr. Sydney Zentall who was President of the Division for Research from 1990-1991. Dr. Zentall is professor emerita at Purdue University. Before a career in research, she was a general and special educator. For over three decades in education, she examined students with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder through her research. A major contribution of her work is a model explaining how high or low levels of sensory input can result in behaviors typical of students with ADHD and autism. In our conversation, she described how her family inspired her interest in special education, her roots in the field of psychology, and how the study of pigeons translated into a career in special education research.
