In The10talents.com podcast, we discuss principles of good stewardship over all areas of our life. Time Management, maximizing talents, skills and abilities, personal finance management, health and wellness and relationships are the five areas where we exercise stewardship over. A steward was a servant who was entrusted with taking care of the property and belongings of a master. Roosevelt Cooper is an author, speaker, entrepreneur and minister who has been a student of personal development and biblical studies for over 20 years. In this podcast, he shares what he has learned and continued to learn in these areas. Each of us have been entrusted with time, skills, finances, health and relationships. As such, we can either be good stewards over these resources or we can be bad stewards over these resources. The goal of this podcast is to help you to maximize these areas in your life.

How Do I Build My Business While Working A Job?

[https://the10talents.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/time-3399858_640.png]Image by mohamed Hassan [https://pixabay.com/users/mohamed_hassan-5229782/?utm_source=link-attribution&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=image&utm_content=3399858] from Pixabay [https://pixabay.com/?utm_source=link-attribution&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=image&utm_content=3399858]So you want to quit your job? However, you have worked the numbers and you see that your business isn’t ready yet to support you full time. However, you want to build your business. The problem is, you have a full time job that you need to work to pay the bills. I can relate. That’s exactly where I am right now. Now grant it, I actually enjoy my job. Especially now that I’m working from home. My days fly by. I get my work done. I’m very productive. However, in an ideal perfect world, I would certainly rather be working for myself than working at a job. However, my business isn’t at the point where it can support my family full time. So what’s the solution? The solution is to work your job full time and work your business around your job. One of the problems that I see a lot of people have is they have very unrealistic expectations around what it takes to build a successful business. It takes a lot of work! Especially if you want to build something substantial that’s going to last. With that said, it’s also very doable. If you are realistic and go into it with reasonable expectations. So how do you work your job while working your business? The first step is you need to look at your job and figure out how much of you is required to do your job effectively without cheating your employer. The answer is really going to vary depending on what kind of job you have. For example… I use to work as a personal chauffeur for wealthy clients driving them around in their own personal vehicles. If you have a job like that, you are going to have a tremendous amount of downtime. You go to the client’s house. You wait for them to be ready to leave. You drive them to pick up whoever else they want to pick up. You drive them to their destination and drop them off. Then you sit around and wait until it’s time for them to go to their next location. That could be 20 minutes. That could be a hour. That could be four or five hours. In a job like that, you have a LOT of time that you can spend working on your business without cheating your employer. So if your job has a lot of time like that where you’re on the clock, leverage that time to build your business! That’s not the time to be binge watching Netflix, Hulu or HBO Max. That’s time you should be working on your business. Next, you may have a job where you can only do certain things while working. For instance, if you have a job where you are working on the computer all day and your day is filled with something to do, you can’t really work your job and work your business without cheating your employer. However, maybe there are some things you can still do while not as productive as the actual work, it is still progress. For instance, if you’re in a business like network marketing or internet marketing, those businesses tend to require you to have to watch a lot of video and/or listen to audio. So, once again, instead of listening to your favorite songs while working or watching Netflix… Listen to your business audios or watch your business videos while working. Finally, on the other end of the spectrum, you have jobs where you can’t do anything at all but work. Maybe you work in a call center and the calls come in non stop. For a position like that, you can’t do anything but do the job. So that’s what you need to do. Do your job. However, you get breaks. You get a lunch. Use your breaks and your lunch to build your business. If you’re currently not working from home, your commute is another opportunity you have to work. If you take public transportation, you can work during your entire commute! The same goes for if you are car pooling and it’s not your day to drive. However, if you drive to work? Maybe you can, maybe you cannot. If your business requires a computer, you certainly cannot work and drive safely. However, if your business requires a phone, you certainly can make phone calls with your phone hooked up to a bluetooth device and work your business. Finally, you have the hours after your work to build your business. Now some people say you should spend all your time after hours building your business. That could work if you are single with no children. However, if you have a spouse, I don’t recommend that. If you have children, I don’t recommend that. Make sure you dedicate at least some time with your spouse and/or your children. Otherwise, even if you successfully make enough money to quit your job, by the time you do, your spouse is ready to leave you. Or your kids are completely out of control making life altering negative decisions. However, after you give them some time? That’s when you go to work and go hard working your business. So let’s say you have one of those jobs where you cannot do anything for your business. Let’s say you work 9am to 5pm, Monday through Friday. You wake up somewhere between 6am to 7am depending on how long it takes for you to get ready. You leave for work at 8am. When you get to work, you probably have at least two 15 minute breaks and one 30 minute lunch. So that’s at least 1 hour at work that you have where you can work your business. Some of you get 45 minutes and some of you lucky people get 60 minutes for lunch. Let’s say you have a 60 minute commute so you get home at 6pm. If you’re single, you should be working your business from 6pm until at least 10pm. That’s 4 hours a night, 5 days a week. That’s 20 hours a week in your business. That’s half the time you are spending on your job. 20 hours a week should be more than enough to build something part time that can eventually grow to replace your income someday. That’s not even including any time you work on the weekends. That’s also not including any time you can work your business on your commute, at work or on your breaks. If you are married with children, then I would say spend 6pm to 9pm with your family. Then you should be working from 9pm to 11pm. Maybe 12am if you’re one of those people who can get up at 7am to be ready by 8am. You can work even later if you’re one of those people who don’t need 7-8 hours of sleep. Now don’t try to act like you are if you aren’t. Here’s how you can tell if you are. If you go to sleep and you don’t set an alarm clock, how much time do you sleep until on average? That’s the REAL amount of time you need to sleep. However, if you can only do 9pm to 11pm, that’s still 2 hours a day, 5 days a week. That still works out to 10 hours a week to build your business. And once again, that’s not including weekends. Finally, the last thing you want to do is look to leverage others to help you build your business as soon as you can. If you have kids old enough that can do some tasks for you, put them to work. Pay them a salary and write it off on your taxes if that’s legal in your tax jurisdiction (Note – I am not giving tax advice, seek the advice of a qualified tax professional who knows the laws in your specific tax juristiction.) Or you can hire other people to help you build your business. For instance, if I wanted to. I could hire someone to write this blog post for me. Then all I would have to do is read it and post it. So now, I’ve taken something that takes me a hour to do and cut my personal time involved into 15 minutes. Now I personally don’t do that because I enjoy doing this. However, you better believe there’s other things I hire people to do for me. One of the big keys to entrepreneurship especially when working your business part time is learning how to convert your money into more time for your business. So that’s what you do. And you keep doing it. Over and over again every day you work your business. You just continue to do this until your business is producing enough in profit to replace whatever salary you need to support yourself. If you need a break? Take a break just like you would on your job. Take a vacation and don’t work if you need to do that. I’m not a fan of this overall hustle culture where you’re told to work, work, work, work work. It’s ok to take some time off. However, you also need to be realistic about time frames. Don’t get on a coaching call with me talking about… Roosevelt? Yes? I tried working my business and it didn’t work! Well how long have you been working it? I’ve been working it hard for 30 days straight. Just kidding, I wouldn’t hang up on you. However, I would tell you that you’re being very unrealistic with your expectations. By the way, feel free to let me buy you your first coaching session with me. If you haven’t been coached by me before, you can do so on me by going to https://coach.the10talents.com [https://coach.the10talents.com] and book a session. The first one is on me! My gift to you for checking out this blog. Don’t believe all of these testimonials that you see online and at these network marketing business meetings where they are like… I worked my business and in the first 30 days I made $10,000. That’s like one out of every 10,000 people if not more. And if you really dig into the story of that one person. 9 times out of 10 this was not somebody brand new to entrepreneurship. Maybe they had a huge social media following of tens of thousands of people following them. Or a huge email list of 10,000 subscribers. Or they had a network marketing downline from an old company that they brought over to the new company. Or they were a sales person with hundreds of contacts. Or they were a Pastor or leader in the community. There’s almost ALWAYS a story behind the story. So you’re not going to do this for 30 days and quit. Unless you really hate it. Then I would suggest that you quit actually and try something else. Too many people do things they hate for too long just to make money. There’s so many ways to make money, especially now. If you hate what you’re doing it’s perfectly ok to quit and try something else. However, if you like doing it, I want you to keep doing it. You are going to do this for 3 to 5 years. Then, after that you are going to evaluate it. Are you making enough money to quit your job? If so, then you quit. If not, are you at least making some money and is it growing? If so, keep going. However, if you’re not making any money after 3 to 5 years, it’s time to reevaluate. Are you really doing the work? Or are you just playing pretend entrepreneur? If you are doing the work you may need to hire an expert to help you evaluate. I do this all the time. One of my coaches told me to do a podcast episode every day for a year before I evaluate it. So that’s what I’m doing. If what you’re doing isn’t working sometimes, the problem is you just aren’t doing it right. Or you might not be doing enough of the right things. So get somebody who knows what they are doing to take another look for you. However, if you’re doing all the right things and it’s still not working. Then you might want to consider doing something else. Maybe this just isn’t your cup of tea. Or maybe, you might be better as a part of a team in a business than on your own in a business. So that’s the formula for working a business while working a job. Does this formula work? It sure does. I have a number of friends, acquaintances and clients and this is exactly how they build their business and eventually went full time. One of them was making as much as $250,000 a year PART TIME before they quit their job and went into business full time. In my opinion that’s the best way to do it. Now you can do it the other way and just quit and go for it. I do know people who had success doing that too. However, I know a lot more (myself included) who did it that way and ruined their lives. Also most of them who did it that way suffered a lot during that process. I did share yesterday some things you can do to mitigate some of that risk if you do go that route. I will also be sharing in the future some more ways to mitigate some of that risk. However, if you want the safest, least stressful, least likely to destroy your life and your family way to do it? It’s the way I described right here. What Are Some Alternatives To Quitting My Job?

[https://the10talents.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/doors-1587329_640.jpg]Image by Arek Socha [https://pixabay.com/users/qimono-1962238/?utm_source=link-attribution&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=image&utm_content=1587329] from Pixabay [https://pixabay.com/?utm_source=link-attribution&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=image&utm_content=1587329]Yesterday, we talked about what are some of the wrong reasons for quitting your job. If you’re looking to quit your job, it doesn’t always need to be a choice of two options. Option #1 is to stay at a job that crushes your soul. Option #2 is to quit your job too soon and place unnecessary financial strain and stress on your family. I want to let you know that there are alternatives to these two extremes and perhaps one of these alternatives might be exactly what you are looking for. Had I been aware of some of these alternatives when I made the decision to quit my job, perhaps I would have had a much better experience. In 2015, I accepted a customer service position. However, it wasn’t a standard full time position. It was a seasonal position. I was required to work there from January to June. I had the option to work there from July to September. From October to December, I would not work. If you are looking to quit your job, perhaps a better alternative for you is to look for a seasonal position instead. Here are some of the benefits of a seasonal position: 1 – It gives you the same security of a full time job during the season that you are guaranteed work. This is great as an entrepreneur still scaling up. Instead of having to worry about how you are going to pay your bills for 12 months, with a seasonal position you only have to worry about how you are going to pay your bills for the months that you’re not working. 2 – It offers more flexibility than a full time position. In a seasonal position, you have more flexibility than what you have in a permanent position. This is especially true in a scenario where you have an optional time where you can work or not work. 3 – Depending on the laws of where you live, you can potentially collect unemployment during the season you’re not employed. During October through December when I was laid off, I would receive an unemployment check. That can be a great help when you are attempting to scale your business. Another option with less security but more flexibility is to accept an on call or per diem position. This is where you accept a job where you are not guaranteed any hours. However, you also aren’t required to work any hours either. Your employer calls you when they have work available to you and then you decide if you want to work that day or not. In 2015, I worked a position like this as a driver. My employer would call me when he had work available. I then had the option to say yes, I am available or no I’m not available to work. As an entrepreneur, this provides an incredible amount of flexibility. If you are going through a good time in your business, you can say no more. However, if your business is going through a slow point you can say yes more and make some money to supplement your business. A very popular alternative to this is called the “gig economy.” If you have ever requested a ride from Lyft or Uber, or ordered food from DoorDash or GrubHub, or groceries on Instacart, you have participated in the gig economy. You download an app on your phone and whenever you are interested in working, you turn on the option that allows you to receive jobs. When a job is available in the app, you accept the job, complete the job and then you are paid for the job sometimes as soon as the next day. You can also consider taking a temporary position. This is very similar to a seasonal position. However, there’s one major difference. While a seasonal position, the employer is almost assuredly going to call you back a temporary position, once you’re done, you’re done. Usually you are brought on for a temporary period where there is more work available. You also might be brought on to replace an employee who is temporarily not working. Another option that can work for a lot of entrepreneurs is a shift based position. In a shift based position, you are assigned a specific shift from your employer. However, you have the option to give away your shift to another co-worker whenever you want. This could be a huge opportunity for an entrepreneur. When your business is doing well, you can literally give up all of your shifts and just work your business while still having the option to go back to your job if things change. If you are close to replacing your income but not fully there yet, a part time job might be a good option for you. With a part time job, instead of working a full 40 hours a week, you might work 10, 15, or 20 hours a week instead. This allows you to have at least some income that you can consistently count on but have more time to be able to build your business. If you have a special skill like programming, design or writing, freelancing might be a good option for you. With freelancing, you take on projects instead of a job. You work until the project is complete, collect your money and then you don’t work anymore until you start a new project. Finally, if you are ready to go after it but you aren’t sure if it’s going to work out and you would like to have something to fall back on, you can consider taking a leave of absence or a sabbatical. A leave of absence is usually unpaid. A sabbatical can be paid or unpaid depending on the policy of your employer. The length of time can vary from a few weeks to a year or more. However, the main benefit, even if you aren’t paid is you have the ability to come back to work at the end of the leave or sabbatical. This way, if you decide to work your business full time during this period and it doesn’t work out you still have a job to come back to. So if you’re considering quitting your job, keep in mind it doesn’t have to be an all or nothing choice. These alternatives can all be great options for you to help you bridge the gap. Should I Quit My Job?

[https://the10talents.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/woman-2692433_640.jpg]Image by Gerd Altmann [https://pixabay.com/users/geralt-9301/?utm_source=link-attribution&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=image&utm_content=2692433] from Pixabay [https://pixabay.com/?utm_source=link-attribution&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=image&utm_content=2692433]Over the many years that I have coached people or provided advice, one common question that I get is from people who want to quit their jobs and work for themselves. Being your own boss and working for yourself can be a wonderful experience. However, it can also be one of the worst mistakes that you can ever make that could set you back for years and ruin your life. If you’re contemplating this decision, I want to help position you to be in the first category and not the second. You see, I was in the second category. Quitting my job was one of the worse decisions that I have ever made in my entire life. However, I have a number of friends, colleagues and clients who have quit their jobs and it was a great decision for them. As a result I can look at this decision from both sides of the equation to help you make the right decision for you and your family. Today, I was watching the hit ABC Television Show Shark Tank. Excellent show if you are interested in business, investing or entrepreneurship. There was a couple who was on the show pitching to the Sharks an opportunity to invest in their aphrodisiac bar company, His & Her Bar. Now if you watch the show, you know about “Mr Wonderful.” His real name is Kevin O’Leary and on the show he comes across as the living embodiment of a “Shark Investor.” Cold, Ruthless, concerned about nothing else but the bottom line. He encouraged them by letting them know that all business owners struggled and even shared some of his struggles. However, at the end of the day, their business was not ready for investment. This couple they had both quit their jobs to start this business. However, The Sharks weren’t interested in their opportunity. One of the things that multiple sharks told them is they really need to go and get a job. They were looking to get investment in their business but their business wasn’t at the level that it needed to be in order to be a solid investment. Mark Cuban ask them how were they fulfilling orders currently and they said they were doing it made to order. This means you give them money and then they use your money to get the product made and sent to you. Cuban said they can just continue to do that and grow the business that way but right now they weren’t ready. One mistake that I made that I see a lot of entrepreneurs make as well is quitting their jobs before the business can stand on its own. That was the problem that this couple had. They quit their jobs too soon and put unnecessary financial pressure on themselves. How do you know if you should quit your job? On the Shark Tank episode I watched, Barbara Corcoran, one of the sharks on the show said something very important. I’m paraphrasing but this is the gist of what she said. People think because they lose their job that’s a sign that they should do their business full time. No, that’s a sign that you should get another job! I was guilty of that as well. Your circumstances are your circumstances. They are not a sign for whether you should quit your job or not. Another mistake that I see people make is they base their decision on whether they like their job or not. They don’t like their job so they believe that this means they should build their business. No, that’s not what that means either. If you hate your job, that means one of three things. First, it could mean that you need to leverage that job that you hate to get a job that you like. That’s what I did. I took a customer service job that I didn’t like. I was a good steward over that position and then leverage that to get a position that I like. Second, it could mean that you need to upgrade your skills and improve your value in the marketplace. Maybe you might be a retail worker and you hate it. However, you spent some time learning how to do graphics design. Then, you leverage that learning to get a graphics design position. Third, maybe your job is the vehicle to fund your business and investments. One of my best friends, Jessica Janniere, the founder and CEO of Look Up and Beyond shared with me something very powerful. This was in March of 2015 where I was doing door to door cable TV sales. One of the worst jobs I ever had, that I HATED! She shared with me that the reason why I was struggling so much with different jobs is because I’m really an entrepreneur. However, I need to look at my job as a vehicle to funding my passion. That really helped me to look at my job with the right perspective. Those are some of the most common mistakes that I see people make with quitting their jobs. They quit their jobs for the wrong reasons and then wonder why their business isn’t having success. When thinking about quitting your job, examine your reasons and make sure you are not quitting for the wrong reasons. Quitting because of your circumstances isn’t the right reason. Quitting because you don’t like your job isn’t the right reason. Finally, don’t miss out on what may be the vehicle to even fund your business, your job. In the next series of blog posts and podcasts, we will continue to take a deep dive into quitting your job and help you figure out when is the right time to quit your job. How Do I Utilize The Power of Prayer?

[https://the10talents.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/prayer-1308663_640.jpg]Image by reenablack [https://pixabay.com/users/reenablack-2245311/?utm_source=link-attribution&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=image&utm_content=1308663] from Pixabay [https://pixabay.com/?utm_source=link-attribution&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=image&utm_content=1308663]So over the last few days we covered the following: Why new year resolutions don’t work and what to do instead. What should you focus on in the new year. How do you accomplish your goal. What do you do if you get stuck. The power of discipline. This is the last blog and podcast on my new year series and today I’m going to share with you the secret to pull it all together. Today I want to show you the power of prayer and how you can tie in prayer to accomplishing your major focus for this year. Now there are many different thoughts and philosophies regarding prayer and religion. Since I am a Christian, we are going to talk about prayer from a Christian perspective. Prayer is how we as believers communicate with God. Now if you have been to church, you might notice that the prayers are very articulate and very structured. While there’s certainly nothing wrong with that (as a Minister I’m guilty of those articulate and structured prayers myself), it is not required. I’m going to share with you a simple framework that you can use to pray without having to say “Oh gracious omnipotent glorious father who sits high in the heavens and basks in the presence of his glory!” This is the same formula that Jesus shared with his disciples. In the Bible in the book of Luke Chapter 11, the 1st verse, the disciples of Jesus asked him to teach them how to pray. Here is the prayer that Jesus taught them. 2And He said to them, “When you pray, say: Father, hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. 3Give us each day our daily bread. 4And forgive us our sins, For we ourselves also forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And do not lead us into temptation.’” Now when I was a child, I would literally pray these words every night before I went to bed. I don’t believe Jesus was teaching them this because he literally wanted them to say these exact words. I believe Jesus was showing them a framework for how to say their own prayers. The first part of this framework is praise. When we say Father, we praise God by acknowledging that he is superior to us and we are under his stewardship and leadership. Just like our earthly fathers we are under their stewardship as children, our heavenly father we are under his stewardship as his spiritual children. The second part of this framework is submission. When we say “Your Kingdom come” we are submitting our will to the will of our heavenly father. This is very important especially when it comes to our major focus for 2021. Sometimes, the reason why we set resolutions and goals but never achieve them is because what we are chasing after isn’t the will of God for our lives. By submitting to God we allow him to decide what is best for our lives, even if that may be contradictory to what we might desire at the time. The third part of this framework is request. This is where we bring our request to God. So in the context of your major focus, this is where you can ask God to show you the path for how you can accomplish your major focus this year. You can ask him to give you the strength and the disciple necessary to complete the tasks that you need to complete to accomplish your major focus this year. You can ask him to give you the favor that you need with the people that you need it with. The fourth part of this framework is confession. This is where you confess your sins and ask for forgiveness. The bible says in Romans 3:23 All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. So we need to constantly ask God to forgive us of the things that we have done that are contrary to his will. Finally, there’s a fifth part to this framework that I don’t see a lot of people talk about. However, this might arguably be the most important part of the prayer framework. The fifth part of the framework is listen. After you ask for forgiveness, tell God speak to me. Then be quiet and listen. While some people have reported actually hearing an audible voice speaking back to them, that’s not what most people experience. What most people experience is an internal voice inside of them speaking to them. It’s almost like a thought in your mind. That’s the voice of God speaking to you. By allowing God to speak to you, He will give you guidance about your major focus so that you will know how to bring it to past. Or he may very well tell you that your major focus isn’t his will for your life at this time. That’s great as well because now you don’t have to waste a year of your life going after something that God doesn’t desire for you. By utilizing the power of prayer, I believe this is often the missing ingredient to really supercharging what you can accomplish in a single year. If you don’t, go back and read the previous blog posts this week. Now it’s time to apply some good ole fashion discipline. Discipline is the bridge that leads you from where you are today to whatever you are going after. If you want to get in shape? You need the discipline of being mindful of what you eat and the discipline of regular and consistent workouts. If you want to save more money? You need the discipline of creating a financial budget and the discipline of sticking to your budget. If you want to meet that special someone? You need the discipline of meeting new people who might potentially be a match for you. No matter what it is you are looking for this year, it’s not going to happen without you engaging in discipline. So how do you be more disciplined in your life? One of the best ways that I found to exercise more discipline is to have some form of accountability built in. For most people, no one has to tell you to go to work every day. You have the discipline to show up to work each day because your job has an accountability mechanism built in. That mechanism is your Supervisor. If you don’t show up to work, your supervisor is going to know this and then your job will be at risk. What you want to do is build accountability into whatever your focus is. What are some ways you can build accountability into your major focus this year? Are you looking to lose weight? Maybe you can get a workout partner who will go to the gym and work out with you? Maybe you can hire a personal trainer? One of the activities that I’m committed to in order to achieve my major focus is this blog and podcast. So what I did was I posted in several social media groups that I’m a part of, my commitment to do a podcast and blog post once per day. Knowing that I put this out there, it helps me when I don’t feel like doing it to keep going and do it. It also helps when I fall off track to get back on track and keep going. Another excellent strategy that will really help you is to hire a coach. Most of the successful people have a coach. The top athletes of the world have a coach. The top entertainers in the world have a coach. The top business people in the world have a coach. The top ministry leaders in the world have. a coach. I have several coaches for different areas of my life. I also coach others, so if that’s something you’re interested in, you can schedule a free coaching session with me. Simply visit https://coach.the10talents.com [https://coach.the10talents.com] to book your session. Discipline is the key to reaching your major focus and accountability is the fuel that powers discipline.
