episode Charlie Owen - One Night on the Somme...with TRE's Giles Brown cover

Beskrivelse

On 1 July 1916, the Lonsdale Pals Battalion went into action with thousands of other British troops and were massacred. Eight days later, the shattered and traumatised survivors were assigned to undertake another attack across no-mans-land that would inevitably lead to more deaths and injuries. They ensured that the attack failed and the entire Battalion was subsequently publicly disgraced as part of a policy to ignore the growing problem of shellshock. This humiliation was covered up for over 100 years. Catch Giles live - 'Let's Talk' - Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday - from 10.00CET...on tre.radio [http://tre.radio/]

John L Williams - Heatwave...with TRE's Giles Brown

Before this blistering summer, Britain seemed stuck in the post-war era, a country where people were all in it together - as long as you were white, male and straight. In July, Tom Robinson writes a song called Glad to be Gay, and by August bank holiday, Black youth are making the police run for their lives in the almighty riot at the Notting Hill Carnival. But with the Labour Prime Minister Harold Wilson suddenly quitting, the pound sinking and the economy tanking, a restless immigrant population and increasing dissatisfaction in the old world order, the weather seemed to boil up the country to the point where the lid blows off. Colin Kidd - Twilight of the Dons...with TRE's Giles Brown

Kidd describes the multiple important roles played by dons in World War II, the countercultural force of convert Catholicism and the strange phenomenon of Tory Marxism. He examines the dons’ attitudes towards America and France―as seen in their engagement in the debates over the Kennedy assassination and the awkward reception of Lévi-Strauss’s anthropology. When Oxbridge came under assault, it was first by a modernising, technocratic Left in the early 1960s, then by student radicals in the late 1960s and finally by the Thatcherite Right―in whose rise, Kidd shows, some dons were complicit. As deference to Oxbridge intelligentsia declined, a reassessment of the place of dons in British public life began.
