On July 1st, the U.S. officially said “not so fast” to a 16-year extension of CUSMA (that’s the Canada-U.S.-Mexico trade deal, formerly NAFTA). [https://globalnews.ca/news/11948893/cusma-talks-deadline/] Instead, we’re now locked into a decade of annual reviews. Every single year, all three countries have to sit down and hash things out. Just a rolling ten-year countdown to 2036, when the whole deal could expire if nobody agrees on something more permanent. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer pointed to trade deficits, car manufacturing rules, dairy access, and worries about China sneaking into North American supply chains through the back door. [https://www.ctvnews.ca/world/trumps-tariffs/article/us-declines-cusma-renewal-cites-deals-shortcomings/] President Trump himself has said he’d “rather not have” the deal at all classic negotiating bravado, according to analysts, meant to squeeze out better terms. PM Mark Carney and Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc say the real conversation needs to be about killing those brutal tariffs we’re talking 50% on steel, plus aluminum and 10% on lumber. [https://globalnews.ca/news/11212083/trump-steel-aluminum-tariffs-doubled-now-in-effect/]Mexico, meanwhile, wants none of this uncertainty and has already jumped into direct talks with Washington. Here’s the kicker: the U.S. actually depends a ton on this trade relationship. States like North Dakota send almost 90% of their exports to Canada and Mexico. So there’s a lot of “tough talk” happening on both sides of a relationship neither side can really afford to torch. The deal isn’t dead. However, the next ten years just got a lot less predictable for Canadian businesses, workers, and anyone who cares about steel, cars, or lumber jobs.
