Diagnosis, Chocolate Orange Pie & Pecan Tarts

Episode 20 of The Coeliac Shack – the podcast about our Coeliac Disease journey! 💜 This week’s episode marks the end of Coeliac Awareness Month, and we're focusing on one of the most important topics in the coeliac world: diagnosis. 🍰 Gluten-Free Snack Review: We're trying Sainsbury's Free From Pecan Tarts – a sweet treat packed with pecans and caramel flavour. Are they worthy of a place in your shopping basket? We give you our honest verdict. Sainsbury's Free From Pecan Tarts: https://www.sainsburys.co.uk/gol-ui/product/sainsburys-free-from-4-pecan-tarts-200g [https://www.sainsburys.co.uk/gol-ui/product/sainsburys-free-from-4-pecan-tarts-200g] 🎙️ Guest Interview: Prim and Terry speak with Professor Elizabeth Soilleux, whose research has received funding from Coeliac UK. We first came across Professor Soilleux's work through Coeliac UK's announcement of new research projects [https://www.coeliac.org.uk/news/coeliac-uk-invests-in-three-new-research-projects/], and we discuss her research, the importance of improving diagnosis, and why so many people may still be living with Coeliac Disease without knowing it. It's a fascinating conversation that highlights how research can improve outcomes for people living gluten free and why awareness remains so important. Read more about the Coeliac UK research funding announcement: https://www.coeliac.org.uk/news/coeliac-uk-invests-in-three-new-research-projects/ [https://www.coeliac.org.uk/news/coeliac-uk-invests-in-three-new-research-projects/] ✈️ Flying Gluten Free We also discuss SkyRate, a website that allows travellers to review airlines based on how well they cater for people with allergies and dietary requirements. If you've ever worried about flying while gluten free, this could be a useful resource. SkyRate: https://skyrate.co.uk/ [https://skyrate.co.uk/] 🎤 Come and See Us! We're looking forward to appearing at the Northamptonshire Gluten Free Festival on 13th June, where we'll be taking part in a panel discussion on Living with Coeliac Disease During Childhood and the Teenage Years. If you're attending, please come and say hello! Event details: https://northantsgf.byglee.com/ [https://northantsgf.byglee.com/] 📞 Mummy in the Kitchen! This month, Mummy is making a family favourite: Chocolate Orange Pie 🍊🍫 Based on a recipe from the 1980s and adapted for Coeliac Disease, it's a wonderfully nostalgic dessert that proves gluten-free cooking doesn't mean missing out on classic treats. As Coeliac Awareness Month draws to a close, we also reflect on the importance of recognising symptoms, seeking diagnosis, and supporting those who are just beginning their gluten-free journey. If you're a young person – or a parent of a young person – who has just been diagnosed with Coeliac Disease, this is the podcast for you.
