Twenty-one years ago, our family experienced the unimaginable loss of my grandson, Kristian. At just 6 months old, his life was tragically taken, and his father was later charged with child abuse resulting in the death of a child. In this deeply personal episode, I share Kristian’s story, the lasting trauma of losing him, and the reality that he would have been 21 years old this year. March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, and in this powerful episode of The Kindness Posse, Natalie shares a deeply personal story about living with Lynch Syndrome — a hereditary condition that has affected multiple members of her family. Natalie’s father died from cancer in 1974. Her sister Betsy passed away from ovarian cancer in 1999. Another sister, Bernice, was diagnosed with endometrial cancer in 2008. Natalie herself was diagnosed with colorectal cancer in 2005/2006. In this conversation, Natalie opens up about what it means to carry a genetic cancer syndrome, the fear and strength that comes with it, and how a family can face unimaginable loss while still choosing courage, awareness, and hope. By sharing her story, Natalie hopes to raise awareness about Lynch Syndrome and the importance of genetic testing, early screening, and family conversations that can save lives. There were nights she found herself locked out of her own home, searching for safety wherever she could find it. Thankfully, kindness lived right next door. Neighbors Lisa and Scott opened their home to her and became the parents she needed — a bond so strong that to this day, Karen calls them Mom and Dad. As Karen grew older, she found love with Brian Bibey. Together they built a family and welcomed two beautiful daughters, Haley and Hannah. Brian was a devoted father who lived for his girls. But on the morning of February 15, 2003, a devastating apartment fire in Rising Sun, Maryland changed everything. Karen, Brian, and their oldest daughter Haley escaped the burning building. When Brian realized that their youngest daughter Hannah was still inside, he made the decision no father hesitates to make — he ran back in to save his baby. Brian and Hannah never made it out. In this powerful conversation, Karen shares the story of the man Brian was, the little girl Hannah will always be remembered as, and how she and Haley found the strength to keep moving forward after losing them.
