The Modern Methodist
In Part 5 of our Deuteronomy series, Pastor Jason walks through Deuteronomy 6–7 and the central confession of Israel’s faith: “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.” From the Shema to the words of Jesus in Mark 12, we are reminded that the order of operations matters: love comes first. Before obedience can be rightly practiced, our love must be rightly ordered back to God. The commandments do not produce holiness on their own; they reveal God’s holy love and show us what love looks like when it is lived out in our homes, our families, our church, and the world. This message calls us to examine where we root our identity. Is it in our size, our history, our traditions, our doctrine, or our success? Or is it rooted first and fully in the faithful covenant love of God? God’s people are called to love and obey, because obedience without love becomes control and manipulation. But when love comes first, obedience becomes the faithful response of a people shaped by God’s grace.
