When in Romans -WHY DO WE NEED THE GOSPEL?
WHY DO WE NEED THE GOSPEL?
Romans 1:1-2 – 1 Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called as an apostle, and set apart for the gospel of God 2 which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the Holy Scriptures
Gospel: εὐαγγέλιον — euangelion (yoo-ang-EL-ee-on) It means: Good News.
Romans 1:3-5 – 3 concerning his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who was a descendant of David, according to the flesh 4 and was appointed to be the powerful Son of God according to the Spirit of holiness by the resurrection of the dead. 5 Through him we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the Gentiles,
1. EVERYONE IS *GUILTY.
THE UNBELIEVER (Romans 1:18-32)
Romans 1:21 – 21For though they knew God, they did not glorify him as God or show gratitude. Instead, their thinking became worthless, and their senseless hearts were darkened.
Romans 1:26-32 – 26 For this reason God delivered them over to disgraceful passions. Their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. 27 The men in the same way also left natural relations with women and were inflamed in their lust for one another. Men committed shameless acts with men and received in their own persons the appropriate penalty of their error. 28 And because they did not think it worthwhile to acknowledge God, God delivered them over to a corrupt mind so that they do what is not right. 29 They are filled with all unrighteousness, evil, greed, and wickedness. They are full of envy, murder, quarrels, deceit, and malice. They are gossips, 30 slanderers, God-haters, arrogant, proud, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, 31 senseless, untrustworthy, unloving, and unmerciful. 32 Although they know God’s just sentence that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them, but even applaud, others who practice them.
THE MORAL PERSON (Romans 2:1-16)
Romans 2:1 – 1 Therefore, every one of you, who judges without excuse. For when you judge another, you condemn yourself, since you, the judge, do the same things.
Romans 2:4 – 4 Or do you despise the riches of his kindness, restraint, and patience, not recognizing that God’s kindness is intended to lead you to repentance?
Romans 2:11 – 11 For there is no favoritism with God.
THE RELIGIOUS PERSON (Romans 2:17-3:8)
Romans 2:21 – "You who teach others — do you not teach yourself?"
Romans 2:23 – "You who boast in the law — do you dishonor God by breaking it?"
Romans 2:29 – “Circumcision is a matter of the heart”
NO ONE IS EXEMPT (Romans 3:9-20)
Romans 3:9-10 – 9 What then? Are we any better off? Not at all! For we have already charged that both Jews and Greeks are all under sin, 10 as it is written: There is no one righteous, not even one
Romans 3:20 – 20 For no one will be justified in his sight by the works of the law, because the knowledge of sin comes through the law
2. THE GOSPEL *EMPOWERS EVERYONE WHO *BELIEVES
Romans 1:16-17 – 16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, first to the Jew, and also to the Greek. 17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith, just as it is written: The righteous will live by faith.
