The Wisdom Journey

We start with John Bunyan, the 1600s pastor who wrote *The Pilgrim’s Progress* from prison, and his unforgettable scene where Christian and Hopeful are trapped in Doubt Castle by Giant Despair. The turning point is not a sudden burst of confidence, but a small act of remembering: a key called Promise. That image becomes our map for what to do when faith feels trapped. Then we step into Luke 7 and meet another prisoner: John the Baptist. After proclaiming the Messiah and the coming kingdom, John sits in confinement while Herod stays on the throne and the world looks unchanged. He sends messengers to Jesus with a painful, honest question: “Are you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another?” We talk about why unmet expectations fuel spiritual anxiety, how suffering can distort what we think God is doing, and why it’s possible to believe God is loving in general while quietly fearing he doesn’t love us personally. Jesus’ response is both compassionate and grounded in biblical truth. He points to evidence and fulfilled prophecy from Isaiah: the blind see, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and good news reaches the poor. We also unpack a crucial distinction for Christian faith and spiritual growth: doubt doesn’t understand what God is doing, but unbelief doesn’t care what God is doing. If you’re fighting despair, this is a clear, practical reminder to reach again for the promises of God and let Scripture steady your mind and heart.
