Processing the Charlie Kirk Shooting: Shock, Social Media, and Student Reactions

This episode, Naya, Madina, and Zion sit down for an open and honest conversation about the aftermath of the Charlie Kirk shooting by unpacking our first reactions, what we saw online, and what this moment might mean for U.S. politics. We talk about the shock and confusion when we first heard the news and the chaos of social media reactions and performative posting that came along with it. Finally we talk about why some memorials and narratives around gun violence feel so complicated. Before we start, we’d like to give a quick trigger warning for gun violence and a reminder that we don’t condone violence of any kind. This episode we had the honor of bringing on Aaliyah Abdul to talk about her experience working as Patient and Health Center Advocacy Program Organizer for Planned Parenthood Advocates of Michigan! We talk about Aaliyah’s story of how she got to Planned Parenthood, as well as what a day in the life of her job looks like. We also talk about the defunding of federal reproductive health funds and its detrimental effects on Planned Parenthood clinics and young people across the U.S. Tune in to learn what you can do to help to advocate for reproductive health care despite current administration changes.
