Peter Lee was a respected businessman who had built one of the North East's largest bus companies - looking in from the outside, he had it all. But behind the scenes, he was secretly stealing hundreds of thousands of pounds from his own business to fund an obsession with a London sex worker. As the deception grew, so did the consequences. What began as a fantasy would eventually lead to criminal charges, a prison sentence, the collapse of his company and the loss of hundreds of jobs. In this episode, I examine the extraordinary rise and fall of Peter Lee, and how one man's obsession destroyed everything he had worked to build. He's the London serial killer you may never have even known existed - from the late 1950's to the mid 1960's, West London was shocked by the deaths of several sex workers, who were found stripped, strangled, and their bodies dumped unceremoniously, like pieces of rubbish. It's widely considered to be the UK's most prolific series of unsolved serial killings, claiming more victims than his similar namesake the previous century, and in a joint 8 part series between myself, and the award nominated Murder Mile podcast, myself and Mike will examine the case in full detail, sifting through misinformation, lies, rumour - and perhaps even downright corruption. In the spring of 1942, a young French girl known only as ‘Veronique’ vanished from the streets of Soho. No-one knew her real name, where she came from, or how she had got there, but she had lived and worked as a prostitute for almost two years, and then having tried to escape, she vanished. Her disappearance is as much of a mystery as her life, or identity. Unlike others episodes of Murder Mile, this was compiled over a decade from the reminiscences of those who knew her or knew of her, therefore not everything should be taken as fact. The Christmas Day Murder of Hannah Smith | Ep. 253

A 63-year-old grandmother spends Christmas Day 2009 exactly as she always did, relaxing at home in her fourth-floor flat in Cranhill, Glasgow, watching television and looking forward to seeing her beloved granddaughters later that evening. When Hannah Smith fails to answer her door, her family assume she has simply fallen asleep. But as Christmas turns into Boxing Day and beyond, concern quickly grows. When police finally force entry into Hannah’s home, they discover a scene so horrific that experienced officers are left shocked.
