Description

The Luddites: Raging Against the Machines 14 Nov 2023 --- The first Industrial Revolution, which occurred in Europe and America from roughly the mid-18th to the mid-19th centuries, was a period of rapid and sometimes dramatic change. It is sometimes defined as the period which saw the shift from a largely agrarian society, with manufactured goods produced by craftsmen, to an industrialized society. Machines took over roles previously filled by men and women, and in doing so eliminated long-standing occupations. As just one example, the spinning of yarn and thread, long the domain of the women of the household, became mechanized. Yarn and thread became less expensive and more readily available for consumers. At the same time, households in small towns and rural locales lost a long-held source of income. As the industrial revolution ran on, manufactories emerged, powered by wind, water, and eventually steam. For decades, water provided the most reliable power source, and it drove a continually expanding number of machines; gristmills, sawmills, looms, spinners, and other innovations of industry. Some were also powered by human feet operating pedals, and the treadmill led to the employment of children. Many labor-intensive jobs in the factories became the occupation of children, and child labor evolved into a social issue as well as an industrial one. Cities expanded as workers flocked to urban environments seeking employment for themselves and the other members of their households. Few cities were able to easily absorb the increases in population, and tenements and slums became a curse on many. Appalling living and working conditions were just part of the price of progress. Crime became a problem in crowded cities. Ethnic neighborhoods emerged, bringing with them the signs of intolerance and prejudice. While the owners of the factories grew fortunes from their profits, the workers found themselves largely unable to purchase the fruits of their labors. The result was resistance to progress, to innovation, and to change. Each new invention found those who opposed it. Each new system found those desiring to retain the old. The one certainty throughout the period was change, a certainty which some greatly feared. → Subscribe for new videos at least twice a week! https://www.youtube.com/c/biographics?sub_confirmation=1 Love content? episode Harry Thaw: The Inaugural Killer Playboy artwork

Harry Thaw: The Inaugural Killer Playboy

Harry Thaw: The Original Killer Playboy 7 Dec 2023 --- “Trial of the century” - it’s a short and snappy phrase that grabs people’s attention. That’s probably why the press has relied on it whenever dealing with a high-profile court case to drum up as much interest as possible for a juicy story that dominates the headlines. Hey, even we here at Biographics haven’t shied away from using that old adage when describing some of the stories we’ve covered such as the trial of Roscoe “Fatty” Arbuckle for the murder of Virginia Rappe or the trial of Dr. Sam Sheppard who stood accused of killing his wife. But today we’re going back even further, to one of the first-ever cases to earn the moniker of “trial of the century” and, to this day, still one of the most intriguing and shocking - the 1906 murder of renowned American architect Stanford White at the hands of mentally-unstable playboy Harry Thaw, ostensibly to protect the honor of his wife, famed supermodel Evelyn Nesbit. So what made this case so compelling? One contemporary reporter listed all the qualities of this murder scandal that gripped the nation: "You see, it had in it wealth, degeneracy, rich old wasters, delectable young chorus girls and adolescent artists' models; the behind-the-scenes of Theatredom and the Underworld, and the Great White Way. . . the abnormal pastimes and weird orgies of overly aesthetic artists and jaded debauchees…" This is the story of a love triangle that ended in murder and became front-page news all over the country as America waited to find out with bated breath what fate would befall Harry Thaw, the killer playboy. → Subscribe for new videos at least twice a week! https://www.youtube.com/c/biographics?sub_confirmation=1 Love content? episode Daisy and Violet Hilton: The Siamese Twins of Vaudeville artwork

Daisy and Violet Hilton: The Siamese Twins of Vaudeville

Daisy and Violet Hilton: The Siamese Twins of Vaudeville 26 Sep 2023 --- Video Description - Check out Squarespace: Website Builder — http://squarespace.com/biographics — Create a Website in Minutes — Squarespace for 10% off on your first purchase of a website/domain using the code BIOGRAPHICS Beginning in the 1830s in Europe and the United States, traveling carnivals and circuses gained popularity. One feature of the traveling shows was a collection of acts and displays known as the sideshow. Usually separate from the main acts of the show, and thus requiring a separate admission fee, the sideshows displayed what may politely be called “curiosities”. Little people, called midgets, were popular. So were bearded ladies; overly obese people; heavily tattooed men and women (which wouldn’t present much of a curiosity today); “wild” men advertised as coming from Borneo, Tasmania, or some such exotic locale; and many others. One of the most popular attractions were conjoined twins, known as Siamese Twins, though their link to that Southeast Asian kingdom was for the most part in the imaginations of the presenters. They, together with their fellow performers, many of whom were fakes, formed what became known as freak shows. When vaudeville and burlesque theaters gained popularity, the freak shows accompanied them. Conjoined twins, particularly those who exhibited other artistic talents, became a large part of vaudeville acts. In the United States and Europe, one of the most famous acts in the early 20th century were the conjoined twins Daisy and Violet Hilton. They performed in vaudeville and burlesque, carnivals, circuses, and even films. Their act included musical performances, with Daisy on violin and her sister playing the saxophone, and dancing. Eventually both sisters played saxophones and clarinets as part of their act. Despite their immense popularity they were ruthlessly exploited and physically abused by their “owners”, who denied them their own earnings, kept them under lock and key, and subjected them to physical and mental abuse. Theirs is a sad tale of exploitation, abuse, and unfortunately does not end in redemption. → Subscribe for new videos at least twice a week! https://www.youtube.com/c/biographics?sub_confirmation=1 Love content?
