Revisiting Luke 15's parable of the prodigal son, we examine the symbolism of the four gifts father bestows on his shamed and repentant son when he returns in humility to cast himself on his father's mercy. We examine these four gifts; the robe of royalty; the ring of authority, sandals (worn only by the privileged), and the fatted calf (killed only when the firstborn son marries).
