Description

3 Ways To Make Your Writing Clearer 3 Nov 2021 --- If your message isn’t clear, changing a word here or there won’t help. You need these 3 strategies to get to the heart of the problem. 00:00 Writing is hard, especially under deadline 00:20 Sentence-level corrections won't save you if your message isn't clear 00:31 Cut the "since the dawn of time" opening 01:03 Write claim-based topic sentences 01:48 Make sure people are doing thing in your sentences ... 02:18 ... unless you don't want them to be doing things 02:50 Summary Next time you finish a document with a few minutes to spare, don’t squander your time editing with minor sentence-level revisions — changing a word here, cutting a word there (and then putting it back). You should certainly spell-check and proofread every document before you click submit. But if your message isn’t as clear as it needs to be, changing the word “purchase” to “buy” isn’t going to help. Instead, focus on the big picture with these three strategies: 1) Cut the “since the dawn of time” opening and get right to the point. 2) Turn those descriptive topic sentences into topic sentences that make claims. 3) Make sure people are doing things in your sentences — unless you don’t want them to be doing things. If you get in the habit of using these three strategies, you should find you won’t need to do as much last-minute editing in the future. Microsoft’s CEO on the Metaverse and Flexible Work 28 Oct 2021 --- Few people have more insight than Nadella into how teams collaborate and innovate successfully. HBR editor in chief Adi Ignatius interviewed the Microsoft CEO to discuss what team collaboration will look like going forward, the next generation of workplace technology, the new imperatives of leadership — and whether and when our future workplaces will in fact start to look like the “metaverse” fantasies of science fiction. He shares examples of companies across a variety of industries that have created effective price strategies as well as his advice for changing prices in response to Covid-19. How to Disagree with Someone More Powerful: The Harvard Business Review Guide

How to Disagree with Someone More Powerful: The Harvard Business Review Guide 26 Oct 2021 --- Just agreeing with your boss (or your boss’s boss) feels easier, but it’s often better to voice your disagreement. HBR's Amy Gallo shows how. 00:00 Let’s say you disagree with someone more powerful than you. Should you say so? 00:30 Before deciding, do a risk assessment 01:39 When and where to voice disagreement 02:20 What to say ... 04:00 … and how to say it 05:38 Ok, let’s recap! How exactly do you voice dissent with your superior? And is it always worth it to do so? First, weigh the risk of pushback or a negative reaction from a boss against the risk of not speaking up. If you do decide to voice your opinion, there are some best practices to keep in mind. State your opinions as facts, avoiding using judgment words. In addition, ask permission to dissent instead of offering an unsolicited opinion. Keep in mind that the final decision is still in the hands of your boss, but being honest and respectful will show them that they have more options.
