episode S2 Ep2189: Historic Gas Plant Press Conference 7-2-26 cover

Description

On July 2, 2026, St. Petersburg Mayor Ken Welch officially announced his selection of The Burg Bid team, led by St. Pete-based Blake Investment Partners (in partnership with Related Group), to take over the massive redevelopment of the 86-acre Historic Gas Plant District. This decision marks a major turning point for the city following the collapse of the previous Hines-Rays stadium and mixed-use agreement earlier in 2025. Key Elements of Blake Investment Partners' "The Burg Bid" Proposal: * Massive Housing Commitment: The estimated $8 billion plan promises the largest delivery of affordable and workforce housing in city history, projected at more than 3,600 units (to be delivered both on- and off-site). * Cultural & Public Space: A planned 15-acre central park anchored by a "Museum Row," featuring a brand-new building for the Woodson African American Museum of Florida as its centerpiece. * Economic & Community Focus: The plan features a dedicated workforce training and small-business success center, 400,000 square feet of retail space, and office space managed alongside partners like Stadler Development. * Honoring the Legacy: The team established a "Historic Gas Plant Visionary Panel," a volunteer advisory committee made up of leaders from over 20 local organizations to ensure the site honors the predominantly Black neighborhood that was displaced decades ago. A Two-Pronged Approach In addition to the Blake Investment Partners selection for the main 58-acre portion of the property, Mayor Welch simultaneously selected the Pinellas County Housing Authority to develop a standalone, 7-story, 80-unit affordable senior housing community on a city-owned parcel at 1659 Third Ave. S.  What Happens Next? The selection moves the project into its next formal phase. Mayor Welch and city staff will now begin negotiating a formal term sheet and contract. The proposal will then head to the Community Benefits Advisory Council (CBAC) for vetting before going to the St. Petersburg City Council for final approval. Audio from City of St. Petersburg. S2 Ep2227: SUNKEN GARDENS Jennifer Tyson Previews Upcoming Events

Waterwise Gardening and Rainwater Talk Hi, this is Jennifer Tyson, Education Coordinator at St Pete’s Sunken Gardens at 1825 4th St N. The dog days of summer are here, and in Florida that means stress on plants in Florida gardens – and stressed  out Florida gardeners! The good news? Hot, sunny days during a record-breaking drought don’t have to parch your plants too badly if you grow like a true Floridian.  Enjoying native and Florida-friendly plants that are drought tolerant is easier than you think. Native plants have evolved to sustain or even thrive in our dry periods and provide color and support for pollinators all year  long. The cheerful dune sunflower and native grasses under our mid-century neon sign are a beautiful example and are blooming now. All are invited to learn how to incorporate 20 Easy-to-Grow wildflowers for Florida Gardens into an outdoor space, even a container garden, this Saturday, July 18, from 11am-noon.  Participants will take home free seeds and a companion publication for the talk, created by the Florida Wildflower Foundation.  Even drought tolerant plants aren’t drought proof, but that’s where rain barrels come in to save the day.  Capturing precious rainwater is as easy as placing one underneath an area of your roof that is missing a gutter.  We use Bti granules to eliminate mosquito larvae in standing water, which is perfect for rain barrels. This naturally occurring bacteria targets mosquito larvae and is not harmful to humans or other wildlife.  Sunken Gardens guests can learn various ways to harness rainwater on Friday, July 24, from 11 am – noon when Melissa West of UF/IFAS Pinellas County Extension will discuss how to set up rain barrels for use in landscapes and more. Both talks are free with gardens admission or membership and held in our air- conditioned Garden Room. No preregistration required.  Stay tuned for more news and gardening tips from Sunken Gardens! See you at the magical land of flowers, flamingos, and more very soon!

[https://www.15thstfarm.com/all-events-st-pete/ikigai-dinner-03-04-2026-e9sly-6k4p3-p83m4-wakr8] The Essence of Life"   "Ikigai and Creating Value for Others" A novel dinner and talk series at 15th St Farm. Throughout history and across cultures, food has brought people together, enriching their lives through exchanges of ideas, experiences, joys, and sorrows.   Amid today's challenges, we gather at convivial long tables for dinner to slow down, reconnect, and reflect on professional and personal contributions to our community. "Ikigai," a Japanese word, refers to " Purpose In Life." "Adding Value to Others" refers to the species-survival requirement that has existed since life began on Earth 4.2 billion years ago. Each evening's speaker will address a topic related to the two themes above. offering "Mind Seeds", and possibly identifying "Mind weeds" in the context of our work, passions, and aspirations.  The topic will encourage small-group discussions. Between courses, time will allow for Q&A. In the spirit of one of the Farm's missions," To Facilitate Community Building," and as a true participatory event, guests will share the experience of setting the table, serving dishes family-style, and cleanup, as if at an informal friends' gathering. #abseesyou #alexisbaum #15thstfarm stpete #stpetefl  #tampabay #radio #radiostpete #cityofstpete  #dtsp #downtownstpete
