These two new habitats reflect CMA’s continued commitment to animal rescue, rehabilitation, conservation and providing lifelong care for animals in need.” 👉The habitat officially introduces four tropical bird species to CMA for the first time: a green-winged macaw, Sulphur-crested cockatoo, umbrella cockatoo and red-lored Amazon parrot. Additional species are expected to join the habitat in the coming months.  Guests can now meet the new feathered residents: Big Bird – A striking Green-winged Macaw and the second-largest species of macaw in the world, Big Bird is known for his bright red feathers and booming squawks that can be heard from up to three miles away. Approximately 30 years old, he loves peanuts, dancing to pop music from Taylor Swift and Sabrina Carpenter, and greeting guests with enthusiastic “Hello!” and “Hiiiiii!” vocalizations. Although he never learned to fly, his playful personality and joyful spirit make him larger than life. Powder – This affectionate sulphur-crested cockatoo is famous for his cuddly nature and soft white feathers. His name comes from the powder-like substance cockatoos naturally produce to help protect their feathers from rain and moisture. Around 25 years old, Powder enjoys pistachios, bananas and sunflower seeds and can live well into his 90s. Skipper – A critically endangered umbrella cockatoo, Skipper may be shy at first, but he quickly steals hearts when he fans out his signature umbrella-shaped crest feathers. Approximately 20 to 25 years old, Skipper enjoys almonds and apples and has formed a close friendship with fellow bird resident Mr. Thumbs. Mr. Thumbs – The smallest — and arguably loudest — member of the flock, Mr. Thumbs is a red-lored Amazon parrot with a big personality. Known for whistling, making kissing sounds and even purring like a cat, he delights guests with his vocal talents and playful antics. He loves sunflower seeds, fruit and spending time alongside Skipper. 👉The movie "Christmas in Clearwater" is being filmed on location at CMA for a holiday romance set at the aquarium, focusing not only on a love story, but CMA's mission of Rescue, Rehabilitate and Release.  This coastal Christmas romance stars Katrina Norman (Christmas in Homestead) and Ignacyo Matynia (My Nightmare Landlord) and is directed by Lindsay Hartley (The Recipe Files). Shooting on location in Florida’s Gulf Coast, the film features the Clearwater Marine Aquarium as both a primary setting and a central element of the story. Christmas in Clearwater is targeting a Christmas 2026 release. About Clearwater Marine Aquarium:  Clearwater Marine Aquarium (CMA) is a 501(c)(3) non profit working marine rescue center dedicated to inspiring the human spirit through leadership in education, research, rescue, rehabilitation and release. With a mission to preserve the environment and its marine life, CMA is home to rescued dolphins, harbor seals, sea turtles, river otters, stingrays and more. S2 Ep2211: LIVE LIFE BETTER Poison Prevention Tips & New Research

In this episode of Live Life Better, host Nanette Wiser talks about a new study that ranks as the single biggest cause of preventable death in the United States, killing 75,761 Americans in 2024... around 208 people a day. It is 1.8 times deadlier than motor vehicle crashes and 1.6 times deadlier than falls. Poisoning has held the top spot since 2013, driven by a drug overdose crisis that shows no sign of ending. Synthetic opioids such as fentanyl caused 45,917 of those deaths. Opioids overall caused 51,088. A recent study revealed: •  Poisoning caused 75,761 preventable deaths in 2024 - more than motor vehicle crashes (42,789) and falls (48,308) combined •  Synthetic opioids including fentanyl caused 45,917 deaths; all opioids combined caused 51,088 •  Poisoning has been the leading cause of preventable death in the US every year since 2013 Why This Matters Now For much of the 20th century, motor vehicle crashes led the preventable death list. Poisoning took over in 2013 and has not looked back. The gap between poisoning (75,761) and falls (48,308) (the second-ranked cause) is 27,453 lives a year. Against motor vehicle crashes (42,789), the margin is 32,972. Poisoning does not slightly lead the list. It dominates it.   The overdose crisis reaches every working-age group. Poisoning was the leading cause of preventable death for people aged between 25 and 34, 35 and 44, 45 and 54, and 55 and 64. In West Virginia, preventable injury death rates reached 138.2 per 100,000 for adults aged between 35 and 39, and 151.3 for those aged between 40 and 44 - showing how concentrated the toll is in the communities hardest hit. The picture has improved slightly. Poisoning deaths fell 24% in 2024, linked to expanded naloxone access and changes in the illicit drug supply. That drop was the main driver of the overall 11.3% fall in preventable deaths recorded that year. But 75,761 deaths still represent nearly 1.8 times the pre-pandemic baseline, and the 2024 age-adjusted preventable death rate of 52.1 per 100,000 remains well above the 1992 historic low of 34.
