Description

In this children's book by Cynthia Rylant, a young boy named Henry decides to enroll his large, drooly dog, Mudge, in an obedience school. After witnessing a highly disciplined collie, Henry realizes his own pet lacks basic behavioral skills like sitting or staying. To prepare for the first day, Henry buys supplies and manages his own anxiety using a paddle-ball. Under the guidance of a teacher named Jack Papp, the pair spends eight weeks practicing commands with the help of liver treats. Despite Mudge's goofy nature and tendency to get distracted, he successfully passes a final exam. The story concludes with Mudge receiving a gold ribbon and a certificate for his hard work.
