Description

THE TRUTH ABOUT ANTIOXIDANTS FOR SKIN AGING WITH VITAMIN C, NIACINAMIDE & SKIN REPAIR If you’re already wearing sunscreen and using retinoids, antioxidants are the next major step in protecting your skin long-term. In this part of The Skin Longevity Masterclass, we’re talking about antioxidant serums — what they actually do, which ingredients matter most, and how to use them correctly for healthier, more resilient skin. And if you live in sunny areas like or, where UV exposure and environmental stress can accelerate skin aging, this is especially important. WHY ANTIOXIDANTS MATTER FOR SKIN AGING Even if you’re diligent about sunscreen, your skin still experiences daily environmental damage from: * UV radiation * Pollution * Smoking * Chemicals and irritants * General oxidative stress These exposures create what are called reactive oxygen species, or ROS — unstable molecules that trigger inflammation, break down collagen, damage DNA, and accelerate visible aging. This is where antioxidants come in. Think of antioxidants as your skin’s repair and defense team. They help neutralize oxidative stress and reduce the inflammation that contributes to wrinkles, pigmentation, and collagen loss. THE MOST IMPORTANT ANTIOXIDANTS FOR SKIN VITAMIN C Vitamin C — specifically L-ascorbic acid — is one of the most researched skincare ingredients for good reason. It helps: * Neutralize free radicals * Support collagen production * Brighten skin tone * Improve signs of sun damage But not all Vitamin C serums are created equal. A few things to know: * Vitamin C is unstable and breaks down easily * The best formulas often include stabilizers like ferulic acid and Vitamin E * Look for concentrations between 10–20% * Sensitive skin types may experience stinging or irritation at first Most dermatologists recommend applying Vitamin C in the morning before sunscreen for extra antioxidant protection throughout the day. VITAMIN E Vitamin E is a fat-soluble antioxidant that protects your skin’s cell membranes from oxidative damage. It works especially well alongside Vitamin C because the two ingredients stabilize and strengthen each other’s effects. This combination is commonly found in high-quality antioxidant serums. NIACINAMIDE Niacinamide — also known as Vitamin B3 — is one of the most versatile skincare ingredients available. Topically, it can help: * Strengthen the skin barrier * Improve hydration * Reduce redness and inflammation * Even pigmentation * Support overall skin texture But what’s really fascinating is the research on oral niacinamide. Studies have shown that taking niacinamide orally may help reduce certain non-melanoma skin cancers and precancerous lesions in high-risk individuals by supporting DNA repair in UV-damaged cells. That’s why many dermatologists discuss it with patients who have: * Significant sun exposure * A history of skin cancer * Chronic UV damage * Frequent actinic keratoses HOW TO USE ANTIOXIDANTS IN YOUR SKINCARE ROUTINE Here’s a simple way to incorporate antioxidants into your daily routine: 1. Choose a serum with multiple antioxidants like Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and niacinamide 2. Look for stabilizing ingredients like ferulic acid 3. Apply in the morning to the face, neck, chest, and hands 4. Follow with broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher 5. Start slowly if you have sensitive skin THE THREE PILLARS OF SKIN LONGEVITY When it comes to long-term skin health, three categories consistently stand out: * Sunscreen * Retinoids * Antioxidants Together, they help: * Protect collagen * Reduce inflammation * Improve skin texture * Support healthier aging skin For patients focused on preventative skincare in and, antioxidants are one of the most evidence-backed tools available for protecting and repairing the skin over time. In the next part of The Skin Longevity Masterclass, we’ll cover moisturizers and barrier repair — one of the most overlooked foundations of healthy skin. Why We Chose Concierge Medicine | The Authentic Health Philosophy

Have you ever wondered what concierge medicine actually is—and why someone would choose it over a traditional primary care practice? That's one of the most common questions we get at Authentic Health. A lot of people assume concierge medicine is simply about longer appointments, more access to your doctor, or additional testing. And while those things are certainly part of it, they're really the result of something much deeper: a different philosophy about health and medicine. Modern healthcare is incredible. It can diagnose disease, treat serious illness, perform lifesaving procedures, and help people survive conditions that would have been fatal just a generation ago. We benefit from those advances every day, and we're grateful for them. But over time, I found myself asking a different question. Not just, "How do we treat disease?" But, "How do we help people become healthier?" How do we help someone have more energy, think more clearly, sleep better, reduce their future health risks, and maintain their vitality for decades? That question led us to build our practice around what we call health creation. Health creation is the idea that health isn't something that simply happens to us. It's something we actively build over time. And in my experience, helping people create health requires three things: Time. Data. And partnership. First, it requires time. Understanding someone's health story takes time. Understanding their goals, their habits, their family history, their challenges, and what they want out of life takes time. Many of the most important conversations in medicine simply can't happen during a rushed office visit. In our Precision Health Program, the average patient spends about five hours with me each year. In the traditional healthcare system, it could take 10 to 15 years to accumulate that same amount of face-to-face time with your physician. Second, it requires data. If we're going to help someone improve their health, we need to understand where they are today. That's why we use advanced laboratory testing, imaging, body composition analysis, cardiovascular assessments, and other tools to create a clearer picture of a person's health. The goal isn't testing for the sake of testing. The goal is understanding. Because the better we understand your health, the more precisely we can help improve it and track your progress over time. And finally, it requires partnership. Lasting health isn't built in a single office visit. It's built through an ongoing relationship between a patient who is committed to their health and a physician who is committed to helping them achieve their goals. Trust matters. Communication matters. Consistency matters. That's why we chose a concierge medicine model. Not because we believe healthcare should be exclusive or luxurious. But because it creates the structure that allows us to practice medicine the way we believe it should be practiced. It gives us the time to truly know our patients. The ability to gather meaningful data. And the opportunity to work together over months and years—not just during isolated appointments. Whether you're in Asheville, North Carolina, Greenville, South Carolina, or simply exploring a more personalized approach to healthcare, our mission is the same: To help people create and preserve their health for the long term. Because extraordinary health doesn't happen by accident. It requires time. It requires data. And it requires partnership. And that's the philosophy that guides everything we do at Authentic Health. Thanks for listening, and if you'd like to learn more about our approach to concierge medicine and precision health, we'd love to connect with you.

Lyme Disease Has Arrived in Asheville: What Every Family Needs to Know

Lyme disease has officially arrived in Western North Carolina, with recent research finding Lyme-carrying ticks in Asheville's Biltmore Forest. While this news may sound alarming, it's important to keep it in perspective: most tick bites do not cause Lyme disease, and most Lyme infections are highly treatable when recognized early. In this video, I'll cover: ✅ What to do if you find a tick on yourself or your child ✅ How to safely remove a tick ✅ The signs and symptoms of acute Lyme disease ✅ When you should seek medical attention ✅ How Lyme disease is tested and treated ✅ Why some people experience lingering symptoms after treatment ✅ My thoughts on Chronic Lyme Disease (Post-Treatment Lyme Disease Syndrome) We'll also discuss the growing controversy surrounding Chronic Lyme Disease, why current testing has limitations, and how I think about persistent symptoms such as fatigue, brain fog, exercise intolerance, and nervous system dysfunction after infections like Lyme disease, COVID, and Epstein-Barr virus. My goal isn't to create fear around Lyme disease. Instead, I want to provide a practical, evidence-based framework for understanding tick bites, Lyme disease risk, and what to do if symptoms develop. Most tick bites are harmless. Most Lyme infections are treatable. And persistent symptoms deserve thoughtful evaluation rather than assumptions.
