In which a flamboyant cosmopolitan, with the easy manner of one well-travelled and amiably persuasive, endeavors to draw out a solitary, misanthropic bachelor from his gloom and distrust, proposing in hope that fellowship might yet thaw the cold reserve of one who shuns humanity’s cheerful convivialities.

The Confidence-Man Chapters 21 and 22

In which a Missouri bachelor, clad in the skins of wild beasts and armed with blunt scepticism, sparingly dispenses his harsh verdicts on nature, boys, and men, engaging in a spirited debate with an herb-doctor and a philosophical intelligence agent about trust, human frailty, and the prospects of moral growth. Most curiously, amid their jarring dialogue, echoes of nature’s mercy and man’s frailties intertwine, casting light on the uneasy dance between doubt and confidence that underpins their strange commerce.

The Confidence-Man Chapters 17 and 18

In which a herb-doctor aboard a riverboat, undeterred by scepticism and scorn, peddles a miraculous pain remedy with earnest, if somewhat quixotic, zeal, even bestowing a portion of his proceeds to charity amidst muted suspicion. Meanwhile, fellow passengers engage in a speculative and cynical discourse on the true nature of this singular figure, pondering whether he is cheat, fool, or something far more complex.

The Confidence-Man Chapters 19 and 20

In which a despondent cripple named Thomas Fry recounts to the herb-doctor a tale of misfortune, imprisonment, and betrayal that colours his cynical view of the “free Ameriky,” while the herb-doctor endeavours with kindness and philosophical patience to restore some measure of hope and confidence within him. Following this, the herb-doctor encounters a frail and miserly old man yearning for a certain Mr. Truman, whose reputed promise of fortune and cure mingles suspicion with a faint glimmer of trust as they navigate the uncertainties afloat.

The Confidence-Man Chapters 15 and 16

In which a wretched old miser, languishing in dim and humble quarters, is painstakingly coaxed into entrusting a stranger with a sum of money under the promise of treble gains, his fragile confidence wavering like the swaying bunks around him. In the dawning light upon the river, a sick man, wearied by past disappointments and skeptical of modern remedies, is gently urged by a humble herb-doctor to embrace hope through trust in nature’s simple cures, though the path to faith proves a difficult pilgrimage of the soul.
