In which the sculptor Kenyon, stricken by the disappearance of his dear companion Hilda, finds himself wandering the sombre and ruin-haunted streets of Rome, a city whose infinite past weighs heavily upon the present. Haunted by despair and suspicion, he contemplates the dark corruption infesting the city’s heart, and encounters a venerable priest whose words suggest a mysterious hope in the midst of his desolation.

The Marble Faun Chapter XLVI - A Walk on the Campagna

In which a contemplative sculptor wanders along the ancient Appian Way and across the Roman Campagna, where nature and history entwine amid time-worn tombs and forgotten ruins, and discovers a delicate marble statue partially buried in the earth. In the gentle warmth of an Italian February, the artist muses on the statue’s beauty and his own more tender preoccupations, whilst a playful buffalo-calf and passing peasants add a touch of living presence to the solemn scene.

In which the cessation of the venerable lamp’s flame upon the old tower incites Kenyon to search with anxious heart for the absent Hilda, whose presence or fate remain shrouded in mystery despite the efforts of friends and neighbours alike. Through the dim corridors and sunlit battlements, he discovers traces of her delicate devotion and ponders the silent, inscrutable fates that have veiled her from the eyes of the world.

In which the sculptor Kenyon roams the galleries of the Vatican, his spirit dimmed by the absence of a cherished companion whose presence once lent meaning to the cold marble glories he beholds. Amid his wandering, he encounters familiar figures in altered guise and is left to ponder mysterious intimations of sorrow beneath the extinguished light of a venerable Roman shrine.

In which the thoughtful discourse between Hilda and a friend unveils the heavy shadows cast by a grievous secret, stirring within her a tempest of remorse and moral perplexity; and, urged by fidelity to a departed comrade, she ventures unflinchingly through the squalid and storied quarters of Rome to fulfil a solemn commission. Amidst the decay and grandeur of the ancient city, innocence treads with a naïve security, as Hilda confronts the solemnity and mystery enfolding the Palazzo Cenci.
